Harris Scarfe has gone broke

The CBD retail thread was getting filled up with Harris scarfe discussion so I've started another thread. Some people have said they went broke in 2001 and then kept on operating so this could happen again. What rubbish, in 2001 there was no such thing as online shopping. The market was completely d...

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail

I agree with the sentiment to bulldoze and start again... bring in a few big international retailers and it could become a thriving multipurpose hub. It's worth tens of millions of dollars Bulldoze it and replace it with what? .......A newer building full of shops ? Sent from my SM-J730G using Tapa...

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail

I have no sympathy what so ever for retailers such as Harris scarfe and radio rentals. If you look at what has happened in the US and how popular Amazon is, you don't need to be a genius to work out that the same thing is going to happen in Australia. Facebook marketplace is also a popular tool, whe...

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail

Harris Scarfe has gone into voluntary administration but will keep trading through at least Christmas while they look for a buyer. Have to say, the city store looks completely dead whenever I happen to go into it. Aside all the other challenges for retail atm and department stores in particular, I ...

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail

Rundle Mall is about to lose a big retailer. I am pretty sure some mentioned a couple of months ago that Harris scarfe were struggling. The rumours were true. https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/harris-scarfe-placed-into-voluntary-administration/news-story/e0dd950cec0215563f3b9ca8d89a5b4e

I suspect this photo is a bit old, but a good perspective nonetheless.

[PRO] Re: Central Market Arcade Redevelopment | 135m | 35 levels

How do we know this is 135m? I thought the actual height hadn't been confirmed? We don't. As per always, some over eager knob has presumed the height in all of their excitement. They've probably already added it to the 'Tallest Building's in Adelaide' Wikipedia page as well... Images will also be p...

There was an article in today’s Advertiser saying it’s a $15m cost for the conversion by Bunnings & it should be open by mid 2020.
Bunnings seems to be killing all of the competition. Total tools in thebarton is now closed.

If fuel goes away they will just sell the next thing.
The next big thing is electricity where you charge your car at home for a few hours.

How do they sell that at a fuel station lol ?

OTR even have stand alone stores that don't even sell petrol.
They had one of these stores on Anzac highway and they're now converting it to a petty station. If it was
such a good business as a standalone store then why are they converting it ?

Re: Petrol Station Owners

As bits said, they're not really "petrol stations" any more. Both are becoming more convenience stores, including fast food, along with other car related services like the big car washes. Petrol is less of a focus than it was previously. Fuel would make up about 80 percent of the income for a petro...

Re: Petrol Station Owners

I actually thought their business model (like McDonald's) is to be a land owner - so they are not as wedded to what business sits on the land as much as simply owning what they consider to be prime real estate on our major transport network. It would make sense for them to gradually add electric ch...

You’re speculating. Why won’t they be able to adapt to cater for electric cars?
With electric cars you charge the battery at home. We've already seen the death of video shops, record shops
taxis, etc due to new technology. Petrol stations will be the next casualty for Adelaide.

Re: Petrol Station Owners

X-Convenience and OTR are both investing heavily in petrol stations with an expectation that in the long term ( 25 - 30 years) they will get a return on it. But these petrol station supply non renewable energy which isn't sustainable over the long term. In 15 - 20 years time electric cars will have ...
