Re: The Federal Politics Thread

Did I hear Pauline Hanson correctly on the radio this morning that she wants the Federal Government to pay for a coal-fired power station in SA to burn SA coal and run the desalination plant at full power to save the Murray River water for irrigation? Yes you did. I don't think she was pressed on w...

Surely a loop (cloverleaf style) would be sufficient?

Any idea when this road will open?

Re: News & Discussion: Electricity Infrastructure

Nobody would object to putting solar panels on the roof of their water treatment plant and tanks. But replacing forest with solar panels is another matter, especially as there are so many other places they could go. Thinking a bit more about it, I wonder whether SA Water's real objective is to stop ...

Im getting confused by everyone's number multiplication. Yes, saying 3 x 3 but meaning 3 + 3 is a surprisingly common error. I think I've said previously that it's akin to claiming we should make the Dukes Highway safer by duelling it! We want 3 lanes both directions right? ( in my head that is 2 x...

Vision: CBD Underground Rail Loop

It's station capacity considerations, not construction techniques, which favour escalators rather than lifts. You need a lot of lifts just to match the capacity of one escalator pair. Tunnelling beneath the water table is not difficult. Though there will be slight ground movements, it won't float ou...

[PRO] Re: Aldinga Rail Extension | $800m

Eurostar, The proposed station is Aldinga, not Aldinga Beach. Aldinga Beach is far too big for a single train station to directly serve entirely, so buses would still be required anyway. But there will be a lot of future development at Aldinga. Why would you want to terminate the line at Aldinga Bea...

Re: News & Discussion: Roads & Traffic

Why would you want to elevate such a long section of railway to grade separate three level crossings that could so easily be replaced with a bridge (or in the case of Park Terrace, an underpass) instead?

What sort of fix are you suggesting for the intersection?
And why is this here rather than in the Roads And Traffic thread?

Re: News & Discussion: Roads & Traffic

Regarding the Fullarton Road/Cross Road intersection, there are complicating factors such as heritage listed buildings on the NW and SE sides. But that scarcely begins to explain the high cost. Their preliminary solution looks terribly overengineered - what's really needed is a dedicated right turn ...

Re: News & Discussion: Roads & Traffic

Does anyone remember the original proposals for Salisbury whereby the bus interchange was meant to be by former Sizzlers and underpass was meant to be built for Park Terrace instead of the current underpass? This is the first I've heard of them Would I be correct in thinking they predate the Sizzle...

Re: News & Discussion: Roads & Traffic

NTRabbit, It is possible to build an underpass without closing the railway any longer than would be required for normal trackwork, by using a prefabricated deck. In some cases it may be possible with no closure at all (using box jacking). But I think RiseHigh was referring to the Blackwood crossing ...

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Airport & Airlines

You could say that about almost any South East Asian destination, but people prefer direct flights, and Bangkok is still conspicuously absent from the list of destinations served directly from Adelaide. A direct flight, even with a fuel stop in Denpasar, would be significantly faster than detouring ...

That's good, but it's a shame they're not extending any of those Denpasar services to Bangkok.

I don't know why the occupation has blown out to three weeks, but the Advertiser is right to criticise it. 'Twas originally planned to be much less time, though I can't remember exactly how much less. Most of the excavations and retaining walls are already done — there's only a little bit at the end...

Why would you want to build a branch line to a low density residential area that already has good bus links to Elizabeth and Smithfield stations?
