Re: News & Discussion: Trams

I was told the other day that Melbourne's trams only generate one third of their own revenue from ticket sales - the other two thirds comes from the government as part of a performance payment to meet certain KPI's. It's a good point - great to roll these out, but ensure they factor in the ongoing o...

Re: SA - Nuclear Future

I don't think knowingly - but you raise a good point in this debate that I had forgotten and doesn't get spoken about much - the fact that we have had atomic explosions released in our State and there are not many places on this planet that share this rather unsavoury distinction. And yet, we contin...

Re: #Official Defence Thread

If I was a betting man (and I'm not - but happy to launch the odd opinion) - I would say the announcement of 12 submarines makes it inevitable that these will be built in Australia, and that it will be certain to be "centred" around Adelaide - the timeframes, complexities and fact that 12 subs gener...

Totally agree - think one-way network in Adelaide would work brilliantly and then we can get some exciting developments in converting alternative streets into public realm spaces - I'll vote for that!

Re: infrastructure naming

I agree - core infrastructure does not make a very good memorial. Perhaps I'm too much of an engineer type - but I think bridges should simply have functional names that work for the real purpose - asset maintenance. Much like we are now trying to provide generic "M" and "A" classifications to arter...

Air Apartments seem to sell pretty easily - I imagine these will too - even with that "wonderful architecture" - think the developer has won that battle with the architect!

Agree - wise words and cannot fault that regarding leadership v management. Guess I just hold the view that this issue isn't the current priority for our leaders to progress. I couldn't find the thread just now - but a while back someone was asking for people's top priorities to kick start the State...

A lot of this commentary should be moved to the Beer Garden I think. Part of why I enjoy dropping in to S-A is the actual debate and commentary on proposals and projects that is often informative. I reckon the tone and content of posts more recently (across many topics) has been moving more to a Fac...

Re: U/C: Electrification & Upgrade of the Adelaide Rail Netw

Don't forget to throw in the safety factor - how many punters down multiple drinks at these events - and in the past, drove home? It is so relaxing at these events if things are going well to be able to say "yep - I'll have another" and know that you can safely get home.

That's a pretty good effort - but suspect the cost manager may have a say on that - the main focus for developer is return on their investment. It's always a fine balance between achieving architectural merit and maximum return for the one actually risking big $$'s.

Re: News & Discussion: O-Bahn

I did actually read the APPA submission - and I cannot see why so much rage at this document? It is after all: public consultation, roadworks in parklands that are protected by legislation and as per my previous posts, a poor scheme that really needs a re-think before proceeding. Apart from some fun...

Re: News & Discussion: O-Bahn

Ignoring the off-hand disparagement of the APPA submission - I think the recent submissions from the impacted Councils demonstrate that this is a political project and not fully thought through as yet - and we must stop to think through strategically how best to allocate $160M to maximise the opport...

Re: News & Discussion: Trams

I wouldn't dismiss the Bus vs Tram argument off-hand. There are a range of really interesting projects in UK and elsewhere around electric busses and busways, such as: http://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/streets-transport-and-parking/bus-travel/bus-projects/electric-bus As always - there is no silver bu...

Re: #Official Defence Thread

Surely the main issue here is the fact that we are a small nation - and we are not going to have a massive volume of ongoing naval build - we simply cannot justify this. I agree, maintaining capability and a core ship-building industry is strategically important - but I also agree with the model pro...
