Re: News & Discussion: O-Bahn

Good point about using only articulated buses. That seems to be the only way to increase seating capacity per vehicle. I'd like some good information about the maximum frequency of buses on the track. I'm not a transport engineer, and my information came from a driver who told me that safety regulat...

Re: News & Discussion: O-Bahn

Leaving aside sniping about vested interests and so on, I have a few concerns about this project relating to cost and benefits. I'm not aware of any published cost benefit study for the project, nor have I been able to find if one has been done. My major concern is to do with the particular scheduli...

Re: Driverless Cars

It will be interseting to see a convergenece of Uber and driverless cars. A large proportion of a taxi or hire car fare goes to pay the driver.

Agree no houses should be built on them
Too late, Llessur. I've been asked to work on some layouts for apartments for sale in the old RAH.

I wonder what sort of titles the government will be able to give? 99 year leases as in the UK?

Re: Bowden TOD | Developments & News

Nathan, you've just encapsulated one of the problems with urban development approvals in Adelaide. ie, 'Councils proving a problem? No worries, DAC will overrule them.' If this is the way development is to be progressed in Adelaide, why don't we just strip councils (and thereby local communities) of...

[U/C] Re: Cremorne Plaza, 246-252 Unley Road, Unley

So, brucetiki, approval of the Cremorne Plaza development is a punishment delivered to Unley residents for daring to oppose a proposal by a local land user. The punishment for that act of insubordination is to permanently deprive Unley Council of meaningful input into the planning process. What text...

[U/C] Re: Cremorne Plaza, 246-252 Unley Road, Unley

There's always going to be nimblyism with any change of use of land. That's not the issue. Nor is the main issue the attitude of the local council. There are other issues here. For example: - Cremorne Plaza is the first major test if the integrity and robustness of the new legislation. To agree to a...

Re: Beer Garden

It would be remiss of me not to pass on an interesting rumour. As I heard it, there is a second Billy Gordon among the Queensland Labor members, with details due to emerge shortly. Supposedly, the public service is already gearing up for another election within the next few months. Queensland politi...

[U/C] Cremorne Plaza, 246 Unley Road | 25m | 7 Levels | Mixed

DAC has approved a 150 apartment development for an amalgamated site opposite the Cremorne Hotel. The proposal, which went to DAC with pre-lodgement agreements from the Government Architect and DPTI, exceeds the 5 storey limit under the Inner Metropolitan Growth DPA by 2 storeys, and breaches other ...

Re: SA builds world's most expensive hospital

You may well be right. My point was that AFAIK no proper cost benefit analysis comparing the refit of the old RAH versus new construction was carried out. The comparison is a complex business. Renovation of large, old hospitals is certainly possible - look at Guy's & St Thomas hospital in London...

Re: Conservative, old Adelaide

Yep, Will, you're right about what we lack. As to bringing up the Yellow Peril, I was lazily rewriting what I said in an essay about Adelaide's tentativeness. I wrote the essay - in 1994! So you are spot on there. We do manage some good stuff from time to time. Like any organisation, we need leaders...

Re: Conservative, old Adelaide

I agree with both of you, Matt and rev. These 'bold, transforming moves' look a lot like a politically savvy premier giving his image a bit of a mid-term polish. There's not much response from the public because there is no demand for the 'bold changes' to be made. Most people are fairly happy with ...

Idle scuttlebutt

I haven't dealt in this particular product - idle scuttlebutt - for a while, but here are a couple of interesting bits of hearsay: - The City of Adelaide CEO didn't resign to the regret of councillors; he was sacked because, in his efforts to protect his administrative empire from the elected member...

Re: SA builds world's most expensive hospital

First, the Libs aren't my party, rev. Secondly, if we could have got the same level or performance by renovating the old hospital for $600 million, as was claimed by the group Save the RAH, led by Dr Jim Katsaros, then Labor should have foregone the political advantage of 'giving' South Australians ...
