Re: The SA Politics Thread

We are poor, is the problem.

Being a bit skint is a problem in itself, for a person as well as a state. The big problem for a poor state is the lack of bargaining power when the Feds decide how much GST to dish out to us.

[APP] Re: PRO: Queen Adelaide Club | 83m | 21 levels | Mixed

I doubt that the glazing to the north would be floor to ceiling clear. Too much heat and probably too much of the old biddies in residence. slenderman - re setbacks: the whole site is only about 21m x 20m. If you had meaningful setbacks, say 6m, you'd only have about 14m x 15m to build the tower, ie...

DAC report on this development proposal: http://dac.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0014/133502/IMDAC_Agenda_Item_3.1_Queen_Adelaide_Club.pdf This seems a very worthwhile development with a couple of small flaws, IMHO, one being that the demolition doesn't go far enough. The development is by the o...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

Apart from stretching the truth, the fact that '46 years' matters to Evans indicates the dynastic, entitlement sort of thinking that has done so much damage to the SA Liberal Party. Who cares how many generations of Evans or Chapmans have sat in parliament? What matters is what they've done, and whe...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

I reckon the cost of MHS' ministry/ies is a red herring. The government owns or rents the space anyway. As for his staff, most of whom MHS has bought with him, they are already on the government payroll. Minor stuff. The point is, will Hamilton-Smith join in singing the Internationale with the other...

Re: ICAC? (formerly Lipson Estate - Gillman)

Hansen contradicts key Weatherill/Koutsantonis claims In an astounding development at the Select Committee inquiry into the Gillman deal, both the Premier, Mr Waetherill and the Treasurer, Mr Koutsantonis, have lied to the enquiry, according to former RenewalSA Chief Executive, Fred Hansen. Mr Hanse...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

Thanks mono. I'm aware of the party/individual difference, but in Australia politics, parties have a particularly strong influence. Like backing a jockey or trainer rather than the actual horse, many people here vote for the party first. This is reflected in funding and backing for campaigns, which ...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

Interesting response Nort. No-one could argue with your points 1 and 2. Point 3 would seem weird anywhere but SA, where such moves are becoming a normal part of the post-election settling in. But I reckon that the move wouldn't be a 'dirty' one if it resolves a hung parliament. But to continue offer...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

rev, you miss my point. Having MHS in the Labor ministry is likely to be good for the state. And, I agree with you that the Liberals are dysfunctional, entirely of their own doing. My point is that, the process that got him there is suspect from a democratic point of view. The member for Waite was o...

Re: The Federal Politics Thread

I was pretty shocked at the reports of funding being transferred, so I rang the office of Senator George Brandis, who is in charge of the child abuse Royal Commission. For what it's worth, here is the response: The child abuse RC has completed its full scope of work under budget. The excess which wo...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

Have the Liberals learned nothing from how they treated Such, Brock, Evans and Maywald. Dog, you forgot McEwen and Lewis, and a few more, many years before in the Liberal Movement, which the Libs are STILL seething about. :wallbash: After more argument in my office about MHS: What he did wasn't ill...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

OK. Spreading or adding to Liberal lies... ?? I'm sick of the Liberals' problems. I'd like to see the dead wood cleared out - the MPs ensured preselection in safe seats 'by right', presumably until they die. They need new blood, and MHS was arguably new blood. The Liberals' internal structure is sho...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

I agree with you that the present Liberal Party in SA is internally divided and is a weak outfit. On the other hand I don't like the undue influence of unrepresentative unions in the ALP. MHS (Liberal) scored 61% of the 2PP vote in Waite; Huppatz (Labor) scored 38%. Waite is now a Labor seat. In Fro...

Ha ha. It would be funny if we weren't paying these clowns hundreds of thousands of dollars to play these games with a system that is supposed to deliver good government. As to the polls, they don't mean a lot because it's years until the next election. If you're suggesting, dog, that the move to bu...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

My complaint here doesn't concern the merits of Liberal, Labor or Independent, except to the extent that an electorate which votes to be represented by a candidate from Party A should expect to be represented by a candidate from Party A, especially given that a lot of people vote for a party not a c...
