THE Murraylands has cast off its economic troubles of a decade ago to become a thriving regional centre.
Much of its growth is based on its emergence as an industrial overflow for Adelaide with lower costs of doing business and handy location near prime transport links to the east coast.
The Murraylands has one of the fastest growing economies in the state based mainly on massive employment and investment in the Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend area.
Its growth is headed by meat processor T&R Pastoral, one of the success stories of regional Australia in the past five years.
Apart from T&R Pastoral, the Murraylands is home to two large milk factories, Big River Pork – the nation's third-largest pork factory – and a range of large horticultural companies. Much of the growth is based on Murray Bridge's emergence as a key food-processing centre of the state.
"It is one of the fastest growing parts of the state with 3000 direct jobs expected to be created by the end of 2008 on the back of $1 billion in business investment," Murraylands Regional Development Board chief executive Brenton Lewis said. The region's success is a sharp contrast to 1990 when unemployment was high, investment low and the outlook grim. Mr Lewis foresees tremendous opportunities for increased industrial development in the Tailem Bend to Murray Bridge corridor.
"Tailem Bend will become a transport and logistics hub, attracting business because of the transport links and low cost of business," he said.
"We also see a major feedlotting industry developing in the Murraylands, providing supply for the T&R meatworks."
The exciting prospects for the region include the development of Murray Bridge as a major horse-racing centre for the state.
Mr Lewis said the proposed Equine Precinct Development will mean an extra 1500 jobs with a new suburb with housing and retail outlets.
Plans are also under way for a $100 million upmarket accommodation and themed development at the Monarto Zoo. "We believe there should be an airport at Monarto, relocating the Parafield Airport," he said.
Growth includes an extra 450 jobs at the expanded Mobilong Prison to be developed between now and the end of 2010.
Adelaide Mushrooms is expected to have at least 250 employees in the region in the next 18 months.
Mining also offers significant potential with Australian Zircon starting construction of its mineral sands operation this year.
The area has also applied to the Federal Government to set up a technical college in the region.

Maybe Monarto was a good idea afterall 
The idea of relocating the parafield airport to Monarto is an impressive one. It would help relieve one of my primary concerns at the moment - land supply for urban development. Come to think of it, relocating Parafield and Parafield Gardens to Monarto would also be a great idea.

Population to reach 30,000
MURRAY Bridge's population will double and grow to 30,000 people by 2025, an urban growth management study conducted by the Murray Bridge council has predicted.
The study also states that Murray Bridge has the potential to develop into a key regional city, potentially as the second largest city in South Australia behind Adelaide, with a population of up to 100,000 people and state of the art services, infrastructure and environmental planning.
It also aims to achieve a vision that Murray Bridge could one day be known as the City of Opportunity; the Clean Green City; the Innovative City; Multicultural City; and the Water Wise City.
The study is a key strategy from council's Strategic Management Plan and relates to facilitating and managing high levels of predicted growth.
The purpose of the plan is to provide a strategy that guides the growth and development of the Murray Bridge urban area.
It will help the council to plan for housing, employment, infrastructure, civic and community services and facilities for the next 20 years.
Potential infrastructure upgrade requirements were also highlighted within the plan, which shows water supply and water quality, sewerage, stormwater, telecommunications, electricity, gas and transport would all need attention.
The study also concludes that Murray Bridge is strategically positioned to assist meet the State's Strategic Plan and Population Strategy due to existing population base and infrastructure, strong regional economy and connectivity to metropolitan Adelaide.
Following extensive consultation in 2006, Murray Bridge council released the Urban Growth Management Plan to the public this week.

’Bridge expected to benefit from new prison facility
CONSTRUCTION on the new Mobilong Correctional Precinct is set to begin in 2009 and will include a new men's and women's prison, as well as the existing Mobilong prison.
Employing a total of 550 staff, the three prisons will also have the capacity to hold up to 1200 inmates.
This includes an additional 430 new staff, many of whom would relocate to Murray Bridge.
A predicted 600 more people could move to the region, the majority of whom would be prison staff and their families.
The new men's prison will have 760 beds and will be much larger then the Yatala Labour Prison, which it will replace.
Yatala Labour Prison has only has 400 beds and is becoming increasingly overcrowded.
The new women's prison will have 150 beds, 50 more than the current Adelaide Women's Prison.
Department of Correctional Services director for prison infrastructure John Case provided information about the development on Tuesday, at a community open day held at the Murray Bridge council.
The day featured a public display showing information about the new prisons, as well as giving the public opportunities to ask questions, vent issues, suggest ideas and complete a feedback sheet
Mr Case said the two new prisons, which are expected to be completed in 2011, would be built adjacent to the current prison, and represented "a significant investment in Murray Bridge".
He also stressed the fact that the new prison precinct would only benefit Murray Bridge and would provide a "positive contribution to the local economy".
Mr Case said studies done on similar towns in Australia which had recently had a prison established, showed that there was no increase in crime levels and no effect on tourism and investments.
He said this was because the prisoners' families generally did not relocate, because prisoners were often transferred from one prison in the State to another.
Murray Bridge's housing market is also expected to benefit from the prison precinct, with the influx of population expected to help house prices soar.

Great news story for surging Regional SA and Muzza Bizza
Murray Bridge has the best potential out of all the regional towns to becoming South Australia's 2nd Largest City, Its allot more better planned than Mt Barker and Gawler which are predicted to have a population of around 30,000 by 2025 and the town is very close to Adelaide (compared to our current 2nd biggest city - Mt Gambier).
Plus with the planned state of the art horse racing precinct, Good times ahead for Murray Bridge.
However, one big issue Murray Bridge has is the width of Adelaide Road (the main drag). Its only a two lane road and doesn't have room to accommodate a further two lanes; this is going to become a huge problem for Murray Bridge in the future.
