Yes, unfortunately the thinking of a lot of people is led by the media, who will generally take the side of "the underdog" (the very small few who will be adversely affected by a development) because greviences are what people like to read, and if they are reading, then the paper's advertisers are happy, and the paper makes more money, irrespective of the effect it is having on the wellbeing of the majority.

Considering these new residents will be travelling to the City for work, the freeway can cope but Glen Osmond Road can't expand but perhaps. A tunnel should be proposed to divert traffic away from Glen Osmond Road.
There needs to be traffic lights at the intersection of Morphett Road and Hutchinson St, slow down traffic by putting in zebra crossings and a interchange at the east end of Mt Barker to divert City traffic away from the town centre.

I think there may be a bit of a stoush developing at Mt Barker to do with sewerage. To quote my good self in another discussion here:
DTEI/DPTI/LMC/Renewal SA seems to have stiffed the residents of Callington in the Adelaide Hills. Shat on them, in fact, almost literally.
The combined genius of Connor Holmes and ex-Minister Holloway didn't include a sewage treatment plant for the subdivision at Mount Barker that Holloway promised wouldn't be built until his advisers Connor Holmes and the advisers for the subdivision applicants, Connor Holmes, convinced him to approve the work.
Oh dear, what to do?
Easy. Approve a pipeline to pump the new subdivision's sewage over the hills and far away, to Callington, and there approve right next to the town a sewage treatment plant to be built by car-wash entrepreneur Tony Catalano and his family on some sort of BOOT scheme.
The new sewage treatment plant will have pride of place at the entrance to the town, right next to the sign that says 'Welcome to the Fleurieu Peninsula'.
Meanwhile, the households of Callington will stay on their individual septic tanks. It will be too expensive to process their sewage in the ugly treatment plant on their doorstep. Naturally, the townsfolk are very cross about this.
No matter, a Ministerial DPA will fix these pesky citizens.
Listen to ABC891 radio on Tuesday 12/3/13 between 9am and 11am. Some rabble rouser has stirred up the townsfolk and given the story to the media, complete with a list of angry interviewees.

Heard a rumour today that the Big W development has been canned (also appears the fence signs are gone) and that Target will be setting up where rite price is (site to be developed).

Baldys (Caltex servo, take-away, café and convenience store) at Littlehampton has stopped trading as of midday yesterday, with the driveway to the pumps being fenced off. Word is that Peregrine have bought the site and are going to build an On the Run at the site, which also houses the Littlehampton Post Office. Apparently Baldys has been losing money hand over fist since Foodland opened behind them a few years ago (this is what I heard from a resident last night, so not official).
Spuds Shell servo down the street, which is in a small cramped space, is apparently owned by Gilberts in Mount Barker, who are building the new servo between Bunnings and the carwash just north of the freeway interchange. Word is that when it's built, Spuds will close. Once again, this was gleaned from a resident last night, but he seemed to be pretty sure of what he was saying.

This is the group that mobilised to have peregrine run out of town at the old oak tree site.
Others have quite rightly pointed at the likely increase in anti social behaviour associated with this sort of development. Is this what we want for our town? Neon lights flickering 24 hours, attracting people from a much greater catchment than our town.
Getting out of bed must be terrifying for these people.

OTR does have the Baldys site, very quick deal done only recently apparently.
The next-door-to-bunnings site however will be a Woolworths company run site (as opposed to the Caltex run Woolworths site on Wellington road). Gilbert's owns the land and is the developer for the project including the other tenancies.

The AM/PM servo is now open in Mt Barker near the steam ranger yards. Is quite large inside and has tables and chairs inside. I assume they are trying to pick up a bit of traffic from the park n ride next door both at the pump and inside from coffee/food sales.

I believe they are restoring it after 30 years or so with no maintenance.

The demise of Masters has provided an opportunity for Mt Barker to create an ambitious town centre plaza, with residents calling for their Council to buy the vacant 12,000 sq metre site owned by Woolworths.
Residents of Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills are pushing for the fast-growing town to have its own European-style town centre...
Mount Barker and District Residents' Association said the area's country town image first diminished when the South Eastern Freeway from Adelaide was built in the 1970s, then with a freeway upgrade and with massive housing expansion approved about five years ago.
... the residents' group said an empty site in the centre of the town presented an ideal opportunity to "give Mount Barker a heart."
A local architect has drawn up a plan for multi-storey office, residential and hotel buildings around a central plaza.
...the Hills town's population was predicted to grow to about 50,000 within two decades, which would make it South Australia's second-biggest city behind Adelaide.

I can't believe this plot of land smack bang in the Mt Barker CBD has still not been developed. It's such an eyesore.

This looks way too "urban" for Mt Barker.
Cant see this really happening in the hills , let alone down on the plains.
Mt Barker is such a hybrid country town/Adelaide suburb that I am sure there will be plenty of local opposition.
