Governors Place
Governors Place
Lets get some real useful civic space by moving the governors fence back 50m, better still put the governor up at Carclew at North Adelaide and return the best bit of accessible park land to the public.
Re: Governors Place
This site lends its self to a fantastic formal public garden linking the city with the Torrens. The natural fall at the rear of the site (parade grounds end) could be developed into a “people’s amphitheater and parade grounds to seat up to 20,000 for concerts. The stage rooms and amenities could be built under Victoria drive and link to redeveloped restaurants at the jollies boat house site.
Re: Governors Place
So much talk about the civic space lost for the Marj but by just moving a fence Adelaide could gain one of the best civic spaces of any capital city.

That's a bit of a throw away line, how about some detail instead of positive statements?Jim wrote:So much talk about the civic space lost for the Marj but by just moving a fence Adelaide could gain one of the best civic spaces of any capital city.
There's not that much free space in there. Most of it is used for marquees for receptions etc.
What compelling plans other than an extension of the north tce garden can people come up with?

My suggestion is to simply have garden open days a few times each year. Get the Guv to throw a few snags on the barby and it'll be great fun...monotonehell wrote:

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Yes ... and...Jim wrote:Still looks like a poor use of a great space to me,
Right now it's being used as the reception residence of our Governor. That's a fairly important role as head of state, receiving foreign dignitaries and so on. Carclew is hardly a big enough site for that.
I agree it's a block of land that would have developers salivating, but you can't just say "this is a waste of space" and not offer any better ideas for its use. So far all I've heard is "more parklands".

They have done in the past. Not right now, unless you're a charity or similar.
(I've tried SO hard to not do any "rear admiral" jokes in this thread)

Re: Governors Place
I'm not a fan of Governor's Place, for a few reasons:
- It's a giant void on the north side of North Terrace
- The oppressive wall along Kintore Avenue, and the tiny amount of pedestrian space there.
- Not very pretty from the west or north either.
Although to be honest, that could be fixed some well planned landscaping outside the grounds.

The path on Kintore Ave is crap, uneven and too bloody thinAtD wrote:I'm not a fan of Governor's Place, for a few reasons:

Re: Governors Place
It is a bit poor for a space that's over 20metres wide. If you look at my illustration above it's about as wide as the road is.Pat28 wrote:The path on Kintore Ave is crap, uneven and too bloody thinAtD wrote:I'm not a fan of Governor's Place, for a few reasons:

Re: Governors Place
Referring back to the old thread, there is always the war memorial trail/walk proposal...
My interest in seeing the wall come down is really due to the incredible opportunity it presents to provide for greater accessibility between the Torrens and the city - between the East End and the Riverbank Precinct. The alienation of the River from the city is one of the biggest gripes I have about certain developments along the 'Terrace'.
