Relocate Flinders University to the CBD.

#1 Post by thejoebloggsblog » Thu Jan 29, 2015 5:27 pm

I am interested on people's thoughts regarding the relocation of Flinders University to the Adelaide CBD. Having another 20,000-30,000 people in the city every day would be an insane boost to commerce and would be more efficient in general.

Locations I think would be good are...
  • 1. The Adelaide Gaol site to the Montefiore Road Bridge.
    2. Governors House and the Barracks (Need to be a republic first).
    3. West Terrace Cemetery (Cemeteries are a wast of space...but I can see a wee bit of backlash).

None of those sites are large enough for a start.

No, on so many levels.

For example, are you aware that the Medical School at Flinders is co-located at FMC?

Likewise, the area occupied by the actual university would far exceed any of the sites you have mentioned; that is unless you imagine the university being housed in multiple high-rise buildings. Not to mention that Government House and Adelaide Gaol are amongst the most historic buildings in the state. And on top of a cemetery? really? :sly:

Here is my idea at the river site.

The Flinders Medical school would be next door to Adelaide's new health centre making use of dead space.

Never going to happen. Flinders is too invested in their current location and a move to the CBD would be of little benefit for them. If anything, their location is a point of difference from UniSA and Adelaide. They're also investing in Tonsley.

If, IF, you were to have a third major university in the CBD they'd be better off staking out their own territory (near Victoria Square — where Flinders already has a presence by the way — or the southwest corner) rather than cramming in with UniSA and the medical precinct dominate.

And none of where you've highlighted, except for within the rail loop triangle, is dead space. You have rail lines (commuter, interstate and freight), parklands, linear trail, service areas and an olive grove.

They've just poured a stack into Tonsley, and have just started another $60m reno at their current site...

You do realise that the University of Adelaide Medical School is affiliated with the RAH?

You cannot have 2 medical schools co-located at the same hospital.

The area over the train lines would be elevated. Minimal park lands would be intruded upon and the olive grove is tiny in general...maybe it could even be incorporated into the grounds. Proximity to the other Universities means nothing in regards to competition. The current Flinders grounds could be used as an agricultural campus like that of Waite for Adelaide University. Flinders is a hassle for anyone living north of the CBD which is the majority of Adelaide residents.

In general the site doesn't have to be Flinders University but it does have massive potential.

The site is already earmarked as part of the riverbank master plan, with the area north of the rail lines returned to landscaped parklands, and with connections joining Bonython Park and the medical precinct to the Convention Centre / Festival Centre / Elder Park precinct. (Strangely though, the website seems to be no more... when did that happen?)

Nice thinking, but it's a bad idea IMO. As others have said the sites you've mentioned are too small, the railway yards should be left for riverbank purposes and there is no way they will ever build over the West Terrace cemetery.

If anything it would be better for Flinders University to expand their presence in the CBD, than move completely to the city.

It isn't for people living in the southern suburbs. The north has the UniSA Mawson Lakes Campus, which is their largest campus I believe.

Some people actually prefer Flinders as it's not located in the CBD, eg rural students.

I went to Flanders University. Its current location is absolutely perfect!

Sorry but all the locations you suggested it could be in the cbd are completely unsuitable. In particular, your comment that cemeteries are a waste of space is very offensive to anyone who has lost loved ones. You'll no doubt realise that when it inevitably happens to you one day.

It is each individuals CHOICE where they go to university.
You don't live in the South, and don't want to travel all that way to Flinders? then apply for UNISA or Adelaide.

Slapping a hospital on the river front when the area should have been turned into an entertainment precinct was a mistake, but dropping a university along an even bigger stretch would be monumentally wrong. Although now I suppose it wouldn't matter.

It really isn't. Students pick three options, their first, second and third preferences. The universities then accept or refuse the students based on assessment criteria and number of positions they have and make offers. Only the top X% of students get their first preference. So if a student wants to do medicine for example they might pick first Flinders, then Adelaide, then UniSA. After the offers come out they may only have the option of UniSA.

Relocating Flinders University to the Adelaide CBD would be an insane blow to commerce (and land value) in the Southern suburbs, as well as being less efficient in general and making the roads more congested and the buses and trains more crowded.

But if Flinders Uni needs an additional large campus in the City, the best place for it would be beneath Veale Gardens and Lundie Gardens. Other than entrances, the few surface buildings needed could go on the north side of South Terrace.

BTW Mono, ISTR students can pick up to six options.
