Re: #U/C: Darwin Waterfront Redevelopment
darwin is really a small city with big ideas! it's so progressive and really will emerge as a premier tourist destination soon enough. (close to kakadu NP, katherine gorge, litchfield NP, the ghan, etc)
the waterfront is just a small portion of the mass construction boom across the town.
all i can say is watch this space.

Re: #U/C: Darwin Waterfront Redevelopment
Thanks for the photos Crawf, greatly appreciated!
For a city of its size, Darwin is really impressive. The amount of construction going on is phenomenal, in fact on a per-capita basis I suspect that Darwin may have the highest ratio of cranes per person. I particularly like the Waterfront proposal, it just shouts vision. We could learn a few things from them. (however Darwin has the advantage of not having any heritage issues to deal with).
My only concern is their Convention Centre. It looks really familiar, but I can't put my finger on it

This certainly is a very large developments in terms of Darwin's scale.
Is the waterfront where the city centre is?

Yeah its located on the CBD fringe. This isn't the only marina in Darwin tooEdgar wrote:This certainly is a very large developments in terms of Darwin's scale.

Re: #U/C: Darwin Waterfront Redevelopment
not a destination in itself, it's more of a gateway to the NPs.crawf wrote:It already is .Mants wrote:darwin is really a small city with big ideas! it's so progressive and really will emerge as a premier tourist destination soon enough. Re: #U/C: Darwin Waterfront Redevelopment
Ofcourse its a gateway to the parks but I would still call Darwin a destination aswell. thanks to its plenty of resorts, hotels, entertainment venues, cafes, restaurants, marinas, attractions, museums, tropical gardens, markets, less extent shopping and more...
However Darwin will be even much better in a few years with the waterfront project and other developments, however I wish I could say things about some of the suburbs. According to family who live here, some of the suburbs are starting to go backwards mainly because of gang crimes. Looks like sadly Darwin is heading down Alice Springs path, such as with the growing aboriginal crime problem.
Though I haven't had a problem yet, but I have seen a few walking around the streets at 3am in groups around the Nightcliff area and theres quite a bit of graffiti around the place. The local paper here cracks me up, theres been two murders in the Top End since I arrived and theres only been a very small write up on it - its makes it like its just the norm here. Plus they only sell papers here from the day before,
Public Transport here is good and so cheap!, 50c for students and $2.00 for adults buses are very good too. Though they don't have timed stops which has been pretty confusing, only the departure times for Darwin CBD, Casuarina Square etc..
Very different part of the world up here, I'm off to get some new boardies and lunch

Re: #U/C: Darwin Waterfront Redevelopment
A very exciting future for Darwin, it would seem.
I can only hope that it is being cohesively planned.

Re: #U/C: Darwin Waterfront Redevelopment
Darwin's attractions are many. There's plenty of nightlife with bars and clubs, and great restaurants.
also
- Skycity casino
- NT Museum and art gallery (excellent standard)
- East Point Military Museum (to be upgraded and possibly relocated, soon)
- Aviation Museum
- Fannie Bay Gaol Museum
- Fish feeding!
- Pearling Exhibition
- Indo Pacific Marine (living coral displays)
- The Wharf
- Mindil Beach Markets
- Parap Markets
- Crocodylus Park
- The Crocodile Park
- Crocosaurus Cove (soon to open in Mitchell Street)
- Territory Wildlife Park (excellent displays, elevated rainforest walk, nocturnal house, underwater walk etc)
- Litchfield National Park (absolutely magnificent scenery, rock pools, water falls, fresh water swimming)
- Berry Springs (fresh water swimming with small waterfall, picnic area)
- Howard Springs (fresh water swimming hole)
- Barra fishing of course
- Outdoor wave pool at the Waterfront (soon)
- Shopping
- Cinemas
- Golf
- and more
A good place to visit, especially between April and October, when it's pretty dry.

I shouldn't like to be in Fannie Bay when it's dry.wilkiebarkid wrote:Darwin's attractions are many. There's plenty of nightlife with bars and clubs, and great restaurants.

Ahh yes, heard them all. There is a Dick Ward Drive running through Fannie Bay and many years ago I frequented two nightclubs, one called Fannies and the other called Dix!
Who said Darwin is the last frontier?!

Re: #U/C: Darwin Waterfront Redevelopment
..... just one more then. You can drive down Dick Ward Drive, through Coconut Grove, into Fannie Bay and go shopping at a store called Beach Bums
On a more serious note.... I was lucky enough to be able to have a look through the new exhibition centre during a trial exhibition held there 2 weeks ago. Here are some updated pics for you.
