Melbourne Boom Rundown

#1 Post by crawf » Fri Aug 19, 2011 4:21 pm

While our own city is starting to enter a very exciting period of development and change, over the border Melbourne is just going insane at the moment. There is no doubt Melbourne is going to crash hard eventually, but in the meantime the city is still experiencing huge amounts of growth that is just mind-boggling compared to what the city was like 15 years ago..

This list was created by Grollo over at Skyscrapercity

Many of those designs are just fantastic

It really does confirms again that we have been totally ripped off with the cheap rubbish that has been built/proposed over the years. At least proposals like 123 Flinders Street and 64 Currie Street show there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I love the multi-tiered river frontage and would hope the Riverbank Precinct gets something similar. upper level(s) with bars / restaurants overlooking the river, then a lower level for more intimate walks right next to the water.

Thanks for the post. A recent visit to Melbourne and Sydney was interesting. Sydney appeared run down and tired, Melbourne is entering a Renaissance.

Every now and then I come and visit the Sensational Adelaide website to see what's going down in Adelaide, it's been 4 years since I left for Melbourne. It seemed for a while that there were quite a few changes happening in Adelaide and I thought great, if one day I return to Adelaide it will be a a vibrant city with some great changes. While it has changed, it seems things have slowed down in Adelaide again. Then I see this thread and OMG! Just look how much is going on in Melbourne. The parents are asking when will I come back to Adelaide? When I look at this page I just think, how can I possibly leave this place?

I'm looking forward to some of the approved inner city developments! There is more going on than I thought!

I will be joining you too soon Rob, this city is moving too slow for my liking, a city where the country folk move to the city and the city folk move interstate! I've given this place a go but I can't wait another 10 years for things to start happening!

When I look at all these developments in Melbourne, all I think is good for them. But excited? No, I do not feel excited by them. Melbourne is not my home town, I feel nothing for it.

So the concept of moving somewhere just to see more progress, even though it is meaningless to me as a South Australian, to me seems like a foreign concept.

Although, we experience less development here in Adelaide, as Adelaide is my home town, I actually feel it, it is personal, it means something to me. I'd rather help my home town grow rather than somebody elses.

We'll it's not like I left Adelaide so I could see progress, it just happened I was offered a job opportunity over here better than what was being offered in Adelaide. Until I moved here I too wouldn't care what they did to Melbourne. It's like how I don't really care what they do with Sydney or Brisbane or Perth.

If if affects me I care. Since Adelaide is my home town I still like to know what's going on there!

I also would have to say if I put together a list of what is PROPOSED/Vision, Approved or under construction in Adelaide our list would also be huge. But with a population roughly 4x larger then Adelaide you would expect their construction and development to be on par with that and 4x larger then what we are experiencing in Adelaide.

There used to be a good diagram on skyscrapercity put together by Culwarra not sure if he still does, but it showed all buildings under construction in Australias capital cities. I found that a far more acurate way of judging a cities progress as it was actually happening.

Remarkable. It amazes me that they can have so much residential construction underway in and around the CBD. 65+ level apartment buildings and we cant seem to convince enough people to move into the city to fill a single medium-sized building, unless it's shared accomodation for international students.

That said, I've spent some time living in Melbourne and the CBD life is an attractive proposition compared to jamming yourself onto a train. Here you can just wait for the next round of carparks to be built!

Please state your source, regarding x4 larger. I just did a search on seek.com.au for design & architecture jobs:

Adelaide = 32
Melbourne = 448

that's x14

I've lived in the Melb CBD and a lot of apartments are rented out to students, though I'm sure the non student market is probably larger with more young professionals renting apartments. The Adelaide CBD isn't the biggest hive of young professionals on good money, and the fact that the Adelaide CBD apartment rents aren't much cheaper than Melbourne's would mean that it's even less affordable to someone on an Adelaide salary. What is there to attract people to live in the Adelaide CBD as opposed to the suburbs? If you want to see a footy match, a tennis game, a rock concert, all of that you have to travel a little out of your way on public transport. Very little entertainment is within walking distance, and I think this is why people are just not attracted to the CBD and rather just live in the suburbs which give you more space and are cheaper.
