Melbourne rail crossing removal

#1 Post by jase111 » Wed Jan 02, 2013 7:15 pm

WORKS to remove level crossings at Mitcham Road and Rooks Road in Mitcham and a third on Springvale Road in Springvale are on track to commence this year, with VicRoads shortlisting potential construction and design partners for both projects.

Public Transport and Roads Minister Terry Mulder welcomed the news and said removing the level crossings would improve safety and ease traffic congestion for people living, working and travelling through Mitcham and Springvale.

For the Springvale Road crossing, Leighton and McConnell Dowell have been shortlisted to continue through the next stage and for Mitcham Road and Rooks Road, Baulderstone and John Holland have been shortlisted.

The works at both locations will be planned and managed by an alliance involving VicRoads, PTV, Metro Trains Melbourne and a joint venture between a civil construction company and a design company.

VicRoads will now start a competitive process to determine who is best equipped to construct the projects, with works expected to start by mid-2013 and be completed by late 2014.

Mr Mulder said the removal of the level crossings forms part of a commitment by the Coalition Government to complete, start, or plan for the removal of twelve level crossings around Melbourne during its first term.

"Removing the level crossings will deliver long-term improvements to public transport and road network efficiency, providing a much needed boost to the local economies," he said.

The 2012-13 Victorian Budget, released in May, allocated $350 million over four years to remove the three level crossings and to construct new premium railway stations at Mitcham and Springvale.

Planning is also underway to eliminate crossings at Scoresby Road and Mountain Highway, Bayswater, Blackburn Road, Blackburn, Main Road, St Albans, Murrumbeena Road, Murrumbeena, Burke Road, Glen Iris and North Road, Ormond.
