Adelaide’s massive medical win

Adelaide, Australia has been announced at The World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering recently held in Prague, as the host city for the 2024 congress. The event held every three years is arguably the most important and one of the largest international gatherings of medical physicists, biomedical engineers and specialists from related fields. The research and work undertaken by those within this genre will shape the future of healthcare and medicine and presents a fantastic opportunity for local South Australian industry to invest in research and development over the next six years.

The win, secured just after the Adelaide Convention Bureau’s recent BioMed showcase is further testament that the focus by the Bureau on Health Sciences and Medical events is paying dividends. Investment in infrastructure with the development of the largest Biomed City in the Southern and its collaboration with the Tonsley Innovation District which incorporates the Flinders University – just 15 minute drive from the city (or via a soon to be opened rail link) is the primary driver of this focus. The congress will attract the most innovative companies and world leaders within the field to Adelaide. Hosting the global delegates and companies is fundamental to South Australia remaining at the global forefront of the industry and in turn, assist the Bureau to continue to attract events of this calibre.

The president of host organisation, the International Union for Physical and Engineering Science in Medicine (IUPSEM), Professor James Goh, said that the energy and enthusiasm of the South Australian bid alongside a presentation of the destination’s technology and research plus the ease with which many delegates will be able to access Adelaide contributed strongly to the voting for South Australia to win the event.

Quote from Damien Kitto, CEO Adelaide Convention Bureau

As the International Astronautical Congress put the focus of the Space Industry on Adelaide and bought about its resultant benefits, this too will open the doors to trade investment, skilled migration and future development of the Health Sciences and Medical industry. It is certainly an event we’re incredibly honoured to host and I congratulate Team Adelaide and the local bid team led by University of South Australia’s Professor Eva Bezak who successfully prepared and presented the bid to the boards and voting members in Prague. We have world class personnel, innovation and facilities in this city however waiting for the world to discover us is not an option – bringing it to our doorstep with events such as this is invaluable.

Quote from Hon David Ridgeway MLC, Minister for Trade, Tourism, and Investment

“Securing this congress is a huge coup for South Australia and is set to attract 2,500 delegates and inject $7.6 million into our economy.

“The new South Australian Marshall Government has a strong plan to grow our tourism sector and a key part of that is attracting more events and conventions to South Australia. The equation is simple –more business conventions and visitors coming to South Australia, brings more dollars into our economy and creates more jobs.

“The next opportunity to maximise the benefit of the Congress is to disperse delegates into our regions before and after the conference, which is something we will achieve through our Linger Longer program. “The Congress will bring thousands of delegates into Adelaide and something 18,700 bed nights which is great news for our hotels, restaurants, bars and city’s vibrancy. “South Australia is very much ahead of the curve in the health industries and biomedical research space and hosting the World Congress will help open up more opportunities and trade partnerships in this sector.”

Quote from Professor Eva Bezak, UniSA, head of the local bidding committee

It will be an honour to be able to showcase the wonderful achievements that Adelaide has made in recent times in building the Biomed City and establish new relationships and partnerships leading to new collaborations and investment.

Whilst we will of course have the traditional industries such as standard imaging, radiation, oncology, cardiology, nuclear medicine etc we must be futuristic and look toward those types of industries on the horizon and on the rise and this is who we will also bring to Adelaide.

Quote from Professor James Goh – President IUPESM

This event by 2024 will present significant opportunity for Adelaide and Australian industry. IUPSEM is a global association with affiliations with leading organisations including the World Health Organisation and the International Science Council. Its charter is to project its image in biomedical engineering and medical physics to industry and education which is very much required.

To have this congress in Adelaide – to bring in the world leaders – to showcase the latest developments and technologies at the exhibition presents significant opportunity in trade and investment for South Australia.

The event, which is held once every three years, is one of the largest gatherings of medical physicists and biomedical engineers in the world. A key objective of the Congress is to promote advances in science and technology for the benefit of human health and contribute to the evolution of medicine. The Congress provides a unique platform for multidisciplinary discussions on scientific and academic issues from different perspectives and to foster interdisciplinary collaborations in engineering, physical, biological and medical sciences. The event creates the synergy and stimulant for participants in the generation of new concepts and innovations in medicine.

I should've added before posting the Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering congress that if anyone has a press release, article, etc., on a congress, conventions, meetings, trade fairs, expos etc., please post it here. If that is alright with the mods, of course.

All these events do bring Adelaide and SA exposure, tourists and money. The more the better.

Cheers
