Vivid-style lights Festival for Adelaide

#1 Post by ml69 » Sat Jun 20, 2015 10:45 am

With the growing success of the Vivid light festival in Sydney (1.7M visitors in 2015 up 20% on the previous year, including 35,000 overseas and interstate tourists) why not establish a similar annual festival in Adelaide?

Similar to the Northern Lights when it ran as part of the Adelaide Festival. Call it "Luminosity Adelaide" or something like that. However I'd suggest that it be run concurrently with the OzAsia festival in late September- early October to beef up our events program at that time of year, especially with improving Spring weather and slightly warmer nights.

By running the two festivals concurrently, there is an artistic cultural program in addition to the lights spectacle. We also build up the critical mass of events that is likely to attract tourists here and not just locals.

There are also some good idea from the Enlighten Canberra festival which could be utilised here in Adelaide.

Ideas such as special late night opening hours for the Art Gallery and Museum for the duration of the lights festival, maybe even open up Government House to the public due to the expected foot traffic on North Tce. Also the Asian Noodle Night Market or something similar is a good idea which could take place on the Festival Plaza and links in well with the OzAsia festival in the Festival Theatre.

I think there is lots of scope to do something interesting with this.
