Adelaide Oval to host rugby league’s State of Origin showpiece in 2020

ADELAIDE Oval is set to play host to rugby league’s showpiece event - State of Origin - in an historic first.

State Tourism Minister Leon Bignell confirmed on Wednesday morning Adelaide will for the first time host a match in the best-of-three series between Queensland Maroons and New South Wales Blues in 2020.

He said he was hoping to get the middle game of the series as a standalone event on a Sunday.

Organisers were in discussions with the AFL to minimise disruptions.

It will follow a fixture at Perth’s new Optus Stadium next year.

This is very exciting. Am not really a rugby man but I'll definitely be getting a ticket to this :D

I'd be pretty p*ssed off if I was from QLD or NSW. What a purely money grabbing idea to move state of origin to a state that is not participating.

Why have it here? It doesn't seem necessary, I mean I don't care if you're black, white, maroon or blue I'll consider you a human and you're always welcome in Adelaide (except Victorians and that guy TimTam). I sincerely hope it's not the NRL's way of pandering to fringe states. No different to the AFL setting up a Gold Coast Team.

It's an attempt by the NRL to grow the fan base by giving more direct exposure to their code, which will lead to them growing the league.

I think it’s a great idea as a one off and I’ll definitely be buying tickets and know quite a few people in Adelaide who will too.

Having lived in Canberra, which is firmly Blues territory, it gives my interest in rugby league another boost.

I’m also from Newcastle in the UK which has successfully hosted rugby league’s Magic Weekend (all teams play their match in one city over a weekend) for the last few years, even though rugby league has never taken off there. But it has been brilliant for the city’s tourism, cements/expands the city’s interest in the sport and gives fans the opportunity to travel and watch the game somewhere new.

I'm no fan of Rugby whatsoever, but the idea of a Magic Weekend in Adelaide for the NRL sounds like a good idea.

We have Adelaide Oval and Hindmarsh Stadium and possibly Coopers Stadium in Norwood (pending redevelopment). Being a 16 team competition, you could do three games on Friday night, three games on Saturday and two on Sunday.

What a stupid idea.
They're trying to grow the game slowly, not kill it off.

Would they do the Superbowl in a city that doesn't have a team? The reason I say that is that there's not a huge demand for NRL to be in South Australia so I'm skeptical. If they were serious, they would set up a team here or announce that they're interested in investing in Adelaide to lead to setting up a team.

NRL is more popular then you think in SA, but it's not popular enough for it's own team yet.
Crowds would be as low, if not lower then the A League.
But I suppose having two shitty clubs that can't draw a decent crowd sharing a stadium would make the stadium more viable? Would make more sense then to build a new rectangular multi-use/configurable stadium.

I can't wait for the rugby to hit Adelaide - i just hope we don't stuff it up as it's a big opportunity to bring more people and investment into Adelaide.
