It would be better if a new rectangular, multi-purpose stadium with it's main tenant being Adelaide United was built across the road from Adelaide Oval, at Karrawirra(Park 12 University Oval).
We need to get over this whole backwards backwater thinking of "were will the university play their sport".
Our city is surrounded by parklands, that are underused or not used at all. Move them there.
With the tram to be extended up King William to North Adelaide, a tram stop between the two stadiums would be massive.

I like that idea Rev, and it would leave space for an upgraded Memorial Drive tennis and basketball centre.

Yeah but, no but, those play fields have been earmarked for the new High School's use as well. That aside - it doesn't seem a terrible place for a rectangular football stadium. Those renders placing one on the western side of the AO seem like trying to shoehorn an elephant into a VW Bug.

I'd still prefer it stay (with an upgrade) at Hindmarsh. The area does have reasonably good transport links already (which will only get better with the Bowden station, and plans with the PortLink tram), and it's the key inner city suburban area for development. Imagine a near future where Bowden is fully realised, and development has continued into Hindmarsh and East Thebarton. Bonython Park has been significantly upgraded (as well as the Linear Path through to South Rd) as the last part of the Riverbank Precinct. Hindmarsh Stadium and the Entertainment Centre are key to the district.

Have to agree with Nathan. Moving footy to the city was a no brainer as Footy Park was in the arse end of nowhere with no transport links other than the footy express buses. Hindmarsh has so much more going for it - the OH and Gawler Rail lines are both within easy walking distance, the trams from the city, Glenelg and probably eventually Norwood go right to the doorstep and there is enough in the way of local pubs and restaurants to justify bringing a crowd to the area on a regular basis. Yes, moving soccer to the city would benefit the city but it would be at the expense of the blossoming Bowden/Hindmarsh area. Moving footy away from West Lakes had negligible effect on any businesses in the West Lakes area. I can think of better sporting/entertainment facilities to build next to the Oval which we don't already have or couldn't be as (relatively) easily upgraded as Coopers Stadium.

Anyone know the attendances that occurred for the last test match? Only heard about 2 days of over 35000. BTW - really impressive how the oval has become a major catalyst to many developments in the city.

More than 100 new venues – including Adelaide Oval, The Henry Austin and a space under the Railway Station – will host shows during the 2017 Adelaide Fringe.

The Royal Croquet Club, which will move to a new location at Pinky Flat after ongoing friction over its operation in Victoria Square, will host 37 shows in 2017.

Not happy that the RCC has been punted out of Victoria Square by the ACC. And how will traders in Gouger St and around the Square precinct be to see Fringe goers drawn away to AO and Pinky Flat?

The festival will officially begin ‪on Friday, February 17‬, when buildings along North Terrace will be transformed into “canvases of light” by Illuminate....

Wasn't some of the "friction" generated by bricks and mortar establishments, complaining about pop ups like the RCC taking all the peak season trade?

That's what I was thinking. Of course, the ideal for traders is for fringe acts to be held nearby but not the associated revenue streams of food and drink!

personally I think that it is a good thing, these guys who complained can learn their lessons.

What the bricks and mortar guys probably want is venues for acts nearby, but with no food or drink offerings.

I've spoken to a few and they see it as there not being any flow between places like the Croquet Club / Garden and established places, because those venues have all services and a captive audience.

I tend to think it's a little bit of that, but a lot more of what they have to offer and their visibility. I've seen some places along Rundle Street packed with trade to and from the Garden. With others just off the strip empty.

The Vic Sq Croquet Club location, however, I think was a bit isolated. It's a vast perimeter wall, with a busy entry/exit. Most patrons seemed to go directly there and then directly home.

If the indicative dates for the Day/night Ashes match next year is anything to go by (Dec-2-6) then this is partially a disaster for Adelaide from a scheduling point of view.

Disappointment more than disaster?
Agree that scheduling is not ideal for us. A slight tweaking of dates could get the Adelaide test to at least begin on the Friday, which would suit Aussie fans who could make a 'long weekend' of it - with leave/RDO etc. And, importantly, good for the local economy, atmosphere in the city.

The day/night format is usually good to boost P/T attendances for later session(s) on weekdays (if tickets available) and adds to affordability and access for some. The potential TV audience (and advertising revenue) probably goes against tweaking the dates.

Given the early December date, it's not exactly Aussie summer holiday period for attendees like later tests, so the Mon-Wed for days 3-5 is not ideal (except for TV audiences!). The early date means we get less of the huge contingent of English fans who travel down under for the series (and book out our hotels) but AO should be a massive drawcard for English and Aussie fans.

Adelaide Oval security beefed up

Additional security measures have been put in place at Adelaide Oval for tonight's Big Bash match after a series of terrorism attacks overseas.

Temporary concrete bollards will be erected after a recommendation from South Australian police.
The temporary measures will be in place for the cricket season and more permanent measures will be installed before the start of the 2017 AFL season.

The State Government will pay about $1 million towards the permanent measures which will include retractable bollards, concrete seating and planted boxes.
The measures are aimed at preventing deadly attacks where trucks are used, similar to those in Nice and Berlin.

The stadium's management erected temporary concrete barriers normally used at the Adelaide 500 car race have been placed strategically around the Oval's southern and eastern entrances.
