Favourite loonies/oddballs of Adelaide

#1 Post by jk1237 » Thu Jul 19, 2007 2:24 pm

Don't know if theres been a thread like this before, but walking around town a lot, Ive noticed Adelaide has quite its share of cult loonies and oldballs. Personally I reckon their great and add much interest and vibe to our city. Heres some that I can think of, in no particular order:
1. Johny the big aboriginal. Aparently he is "all there", but has fetish for wearing leotards and dancing in his houla hoop down Hindley St
2. short fat man that tries to play his keyboard/xylophone, with his legs sticking out. Usually at Myer Centre and Hungry Jacks Rundle St.
3. that crazy little old aboriginal guy with the beard that tries to speak to everyone he sees, but no one can understand him. He likes to think he's part of the act whenever someone is busking in Rundle Mall. I like his suit jacket he wears.
4. the lady with white hair who seems to have a full time job in politely and quietly asking everyone "can you spare $2". Likes to target everyone at bus stops.
5. a crazy asian lady who has her umbrella up when its not raining, talking to herself and occasionally snapping at nothing.
6. a young guy with tatty blonde hair, always outside Hindley St maccas looking in bins, talking to himself and his head goes in all directions.
7. Arguably the most funny, the young guy that wears the top hat, dark hair and tight jeans, who marches very fast up and down Rundle Mall "humming" rather loudly to his walkman. Just watch the reaction of people around him.
8. the chromers - a young couple always shitty with each other who seem to always have one arm tucked up inside their jumpers. I wonder what their doing? You can see the silver paint splatted all over her blue adidas jumper.
9. A long lost figure is the bin scab who used to constantly sing out loud.

What about that bloke that rides his bike around the streets of Adelaide and belts out motorbike sounds - classic.

Theres the hordes of emo kids with their violent attitudes hollering at each other on Saturday nights down Hindley. You can't walk by without turning your head around to see whos screaming at who from across the road.

Btw, the walkman dude in Rundle Mall is my favourite nutcase... not that he is one, but like how he doesn't give a care in the world about what he does. His humming is rather loud and out of tune though.

Ah the dude on the bike. I have seen him scare a lot of people when he yells out stuff behind them.

You missed the old guy who wears a suit and a top hat. He always has matching socks, tie, handkerchief and what ever it is around the top hat.
They are usually purple, sometimes green. He is all there. He goes around talking to people. I have seen him around at Tea Tree Plaza a few times also.

Shows how much of a giant country town Adelaide is. I've seen almost all of these characters! :D

Yeah, I remember seeing him a bit and thinking he was a meth head or something... bit of an angry look to him. Everyone loves Johnny but I don't really care for the piano man.

I don't know if he's still there, but the old boy who dresses up in the army uniform and tries to give away bibles out the front of the Woolies in Rundle Mall is also another one.

I HATE THE BIBLE GUY!

I even told him to eff off once, simply because I can't stand the fact that religion is being commercialised in that matter, and that the church has to conform to the practices of the business world just so they can take their edge off on 'issues'.

Then there's the short lady who always stands on corners thrusting religious propagana at passers by saying "It's important!"

I saw one guy a few months ago with a shopping trolley full of bottles and cans. He was going through all the bins looking for more. He was halfway in a bin with his head all the way in looking for more when he suddenly stopped and reached into his pocket. He pulled a mobile phone out and answered it.... Is it just me or does something not seem right here.

I have got that old woman asking me to spare a few dollars so many times I can't count.
There is also this younger one who always asks for $2.60, for a bus ticket. I still can't work out what bus ticket costs $2.60.

One homeless dude didn't ask me for money. He just offered me some advice "you need a priest, you are going to die". I wonder if he sees things above peoples heads like in the Nickelback video clip :P

hahaha good thread - I have seen and spoken to most of these people and probably a few more but i will try and keep this brief :)

Johnny is not all there, although he speaks well it is my understanding that he was a promising footballer who blew his mind on LSD and is now not considered suitable to manage his own affairs - but he is fun to talk to if you can get him to stop for a few moments. He has even been invited to some rave parties in the last few years just to be there and juggle or whatever he feels like doing. definitely local celebrity :!:

the guy who used to sing alot while raiding bins for cans and bottles i believe is now deceased (RIP) but if anyone can tell me otherwise i would be happy to hear it.

The lady who says "Its important" is called Rose and she is spruiking for The Virgin Mary - if you need to get a lesson in faith just have a few words with her one day ...

Walkman dude with the top hat is pretty normal (amen momentkiller!) - except for the loud "humming" (i'd call it shouting but thats just semantics), he scares people but maybe thats just the crows scarf he often wears :)

Theres another chap who often stands on corners dressed in a suit with socks over the pants and a pipe yelling stuff - although this could be one of the same guys mentioned here already

i have been told by those that purport to know that the shorty with the piano is infact a certified virtuoso but maybe he became disillusioned? there was an article about him in our favourite Advertiser once upon a time too!

that crazy Aboriginal with the suit jacket is called Gary - that was about all I could ever understand of him :)

and last but not least (for now) the paint sniffers. now this is just my opinion but that is one f-ed up couple. they are always together (or not far away) and often in topham mall (not called "Skank Alley" for nothing). they seem to be either intimately linked or screaming at each other. just as long as they never breed :2cents:

anyway, more info as i remember it!

gold thread
