Disappointing that some particular websites still insist on posting images of Adelaide from last decade...

It's lazy journalism, just reverting to stock file images.

Fire in Chinatown.

A massive blaze has destroyed a string of shops in Adelaide’s China Town.

Around 70 firefighters and 16 fire trucks rushed to the scene on Grote Street at 1am this morning.

The fire grew to an 'alarm level four', which means firefighters were throwing all resources at it.

It took an hour to contain.

A sushi shop, dumpling bar, Asian supermarket and travel agent are among the shops that have been gutted.

It has already left a two-million dollar damage bill and has prompted a smoke warning.

Locals are being warned to stay inside and close all doors and windows until the smoke passes.

Though the threat has passed firefighters predict they’ll be on the scene for some time, to extinguish smouldering stock and monitor hotspots.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

I could smell the smoke last night. Didn't realise how bad it was. Thoughts are with those businesses affected.

Chinatown businesses damaged by fire in $1.5 million damage bill

By Elizabeth Henson

AT LEAST three business have been destroyed and up to 10 others have been damaged in a large fire at a Chinatown building complex.

The MFS says up to $1.5 million damage has been caused after a blaze ripped through an Asian supermarket and adjoining businesses on Grote and Moonta streets.

Firefighters were on the scene within minutes after a passer-by called triple-0 about 1am on Tuesday to report smoke billowing from a Grote St building.

About 65 firefighters from 17 trucks and six support vehicles took about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Police originally suspected an arsonist started the fire but now say it is not considered suspicious.

Adelaide MFS Commander David Juniper said early estimates put the damage bill at up to $1.5 million.

“To the naked eye you probably wouldn’t think all the properties have been damaged but if you start looking on top of the roof … (at) the ceiling area, that’s been significantly damaged there,” he said.

“I would say all the properties in this block, which would equate to probably 10 to 12, would have been damaged — some obviously have more significant damage, others not as bad.”

Mr Juniper said the blaze “developed very quickly”.

“On arrival, a lot of smoke, there were flames coming up from the top,” he said.

Mr Juniper said firefighters were met with challenging conditions at the scene.

“(There were) a lot of dead ends in there (and) we sort of surrounded it from three sides,” he said.

Mr Juniper said fire cause investigators were yet to determine where the inferno started.

“All the premises seem to have cooking areas and storage areas at the back that meet at one point so there’s significant damage internally in the middle and that damage sort of spread out from there,” he said.

“There’s some really big steel beams there that have been bent out of shape.”

Emergency services remain on site.

Police ask anyone with information about the fire to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Does it phpBB have the 'image' verification that requires you to manually click on certain images? Or is there a mod/addon that can be installed?
That is pretty standard now on pretty much most sites that require you to register an account, and many even require you to go through that process just to log in.

I am surprised some of the spam has lasted as long as it has on here...considering there's some guys here who love deleting posts

Good photo. I've really noticed that the look of the Adelaide CBD at night has improved hugely through feature lighting in high pedestrian areas. This has occurred in the past year or two.

Areas such as North Tce look brilliant now at night with those trees lit up, and the Riverbank area is looking better and better at night.

I even noticed catenary lighting in one of our laneways (can't remember which one) when I was in the city at night about a month ago.

All these lighting improvements really add to the appeal and atmosphere of the CBD at night. So whoever is responsible for this ... ACC or State Govt ... well done and keep it up.

Well said. Makes a more appealing and safer CBD.

I'm aware of its limitations, but it's worth noting for its use as a marketing tool that in The Economist's Livability Index for 2018 Adelaide sliped from 5th to 10th. Our score was in fact static but several other cities improved theirs and jumped ahead. Interestingly, Calgary - with which Adelaide has previously tied for 5th - improved into 4th place due to increases in its 'Culture & Environment' and 'Infrastructure' scores.

Interesting document. I personally wouldn't rate our infrastructure a 96.4, obviously it's no Damascus but it's not the most efficient. Maybe around the mid 80s.

At the same time, I'd rate our Culture & Environment a bit higher than it is.

So apparently there's a massive cluster of 400 dormant volcanoes between Mt Gambier and Melbourne. The last one erupted at Mt Gambier 5,000 years ago, and according to "experts" a volcano could erupt at any moment.

While it's the daily mail, I thought this might interest some given all the major earthquakes and volcanoes going off lately.
