There is a downside aswell. The WA liberals support uranium mining in WA unlike the WA Labor party which had promised to ban it.

This is bad news for us as it creates a competitor to our uranium monopoly.
Do you think will have much of an impact on SA though?

I was under the impression that SA had a large portion of the world supplies in our backyard. How much do WA have?

ODX conservatively has 40% of the worlds easily extractable uranium (and even better, it's a by-product of the ODX mine which is primarily focused on hard minerals, and is therefore "cream" from a profit perspective making it sooo much more attractive).

That being said, it's all about "known uranium deposits". If WA starts seriously searching for more uranium then SA's percentage might drop from 40+% to 30+%. Again we are lucky to have such a massive resource operated by BHP on our doorstep...

Such arguments, while rooted in well intentioned parochialism, are short-sighted at best. It is in SA's best interest that WA pursue policies to increase their economic output, even if it may add some additional competition in the uranium market. We must remember that we are all parts of the Australian economy. Economic growth is not confined within WA's state boundaries (thank goodness for us). So while WA may take of our some market share, we'll all reap the benefits through additional consumption and taxation revenue.

Off Factiva:
Games are there for our taking
MICHAEL McGUIRE
The Advertiser, 28 October 2008

ADELAIDE has a strong chance of hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games if the State Government backs a bid, the head of the Australian Commonwealth Games Federation says.

However, time is running out for Premier Mike Rann's Government to change its position. The Government says it is not interested in hosting the event, which Treasurer Kevin Foley has labelled ``B-grade''.

``The position remains the same, particularly in the current economic climate,'' Government spokesman Lachlan Parker said yesterday.

The ACGF will meet on November 29 to decide whether Australia will bid for the 2018 Games and it has asked for expressions of interest to be lodged before then.

Federation chief executive Perry Crosswhite has urged the State Government to support a bid and said Adelaide would be a strong contender as the only mainland capital city not to have hosted a Commonwealth Games.

``Adelaide has a legitimate argument to say it is the only mainland capital city that has never hosted the Games and therefore should be given due consideration,'' Mr Crosswhite said.

``It's an important factor because there is a view that these Games don't belong to a city, they belong to the nation.

``Interestingly there may be some sympathy to Adelaide because of the 1998 situation.''

Many in the international Commonwealth Games community are believed to be well disposed to an Adelaide bid because the city missed out on hosting the 1998 Games, which went to Kuala Lumpur.

Adelaide's bid for the 1998 Games, led by former Premier John Bannon, was widely regarded as the frontrunner for much of the race but was pipped by a late change in sentiment that favoured awarding the Games to a developing nation.

Adelaide was also awarded the right to host the 1962 Games but withdrew and Perth staged the event instead.

To date, Nigeria is the only country to express an interest in hosting the 2018 event but Federation president Sam Coffa yesterday said there may be some resistance to again staging a Games in a developing nation.

The next Games are being held in Delhi, India, but preparation is well behind schedule and some overseas reports suggest the 2010 Games could be handed to 2006 host Melbourne if the situation does not improve. The 2014 Games are being held in Glasgow, Scotland.

Mr Coffa said the situation in Delhi could work to Australia's and Adelaide's advantage. ``If Africa does not proceed with a bid then who will be next?,'' he said.

Mr Coffa said Australia's track record of delivering a commercially-viable games staged in quality facilities was also widely admired across the Commonwealth.

The ACGF has already written to all state and territory premiers and chief ministers asking for expressions of interest in hosting the Games.

The West Australian and Queensland governments have already expressed an interest and it is believed the New South Wales Government is also considering nominating Sydney.

The ACGF has already said it would make a decision on which Australian city it will submit, if any, to the international judging process by around August next year. The London-based Commonwealth Games Federation is expected to make a decision on the host city in 2011.

Liberal Opposition leader Martin Hamilton-Smith has already said he supports a bid to bring the Games to Adelaide and has promised to build a new multi-purpose stadium in the city for the main venue, if elected.

If Mr Hamilton-Smith's proposal was adopted it could cost South Australia about $2 billion to host the Games, although there is no suggestion the taxpayer should foot the entire bill to build a new venue.

Victoria spent $1.1 billion in operating and capital costs to stage the 2006 Games, with the Commonwealth Government contributing $121.9 million in grants, $24.2 million in in-kind support and covering security costs of $79.1 million.

I'm suprised that Melbourne could host the Games again if New Delhi fails to get its act together.

News today that the Gold Coast is launching an official bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games with up to $1B to be spent on upgrading infrastructure if successful.

Another reason labor should not have won the election. Now regional cities are iovertaking us. Adelaide is the only mainland state capital to not have hosted a games and now regional cities are applying.

this really gets to me the Labor governemnt is so out of touch with what this state needs.

Imagine the massive confidence boost South Australians would have as a result of knowing we would host such an event... I guess I can dream..

Gold Coast bids for 2018 Commonwealth Games

From: AAP March 31, 2010

QUEENSLAND Premier Anna Bligh will officially sign the Gold Coast's Commonwealth Games bid today.

Two weeks ago, Ms Bligh said the state government would spend up to $11 million on a formal bid to host the 2018 Games, and if successful, would invest up to $1 billion in infrastructure over the next eight years.

She said up to 30,000 jobs would be created in the lead-up to and during the event, with tourism and construction the big winners.

The Gold Coast will be competing against Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. Auckland is also considering making a bid.

The last Australian city to host a Commonwealth Games was Melbourne in 2006.

Question is does the Gold Coast have a good chance? considering Melbourne only hosted them 4 years ago.

If the Gold Coast isn't successful, Adelaide should bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games or maybe World Expo once the Convention Centre expansion is complete.

This state was in a state of decay for many years during the 80's, 90's and even the early 00's.

This meant that there was not enough money to fix or even maintain the essentials.

I know that the state government's program may be perceived as 'boring', but it is such 'boring' policies that are placing us on a better position to fully maximise the future good times.

For example, it would be irresponsible for a household to buy a 50 inch plasma TV if they did not have a functioning washing machine or stove. Likewise, I would rather the government first fix our roads, hospitals and schools and build things such as desalination plants before undertaking luxury items such as hosting the British Empire Games.

note to self: Should not have bought 50" TV last week. Clothes still dirty.

This, and the Queensland Government is in debt to the tune of $84 billion?

They would have to build a new stadium on the GC as the new ground which
is being built for the GC Afl team only has a capacity of 25,000.

I would have though that the QLD government would be better off put a nomination
in for Brisbane rather than the GC, since the facilities are there in Brisbane.

Is it not upgradable?

Brisbane's already had them in 1982, so nominating again would be a retrograde step!

If the South Brisbane Sprawl really wants to try to convince us that it's a major city in its own right, that's their business. It's not as if they're at all likely to beat Abuja anyway.

Australia is in the Oceania region as far as the Commonwealth Games is concerned. Of the other five regions:
The Americas last had the\ games in Victoria (BC) in 1994
Africa has never had it yet, but is likely to in 2018
Asia had them in 1998 and will again this year.
Europe has them most often, and will again in 2014
And The Carribean hasn't had them since 1966, so any bid there is likely to be the sentimental favourite if they run in 2022.

BUSINESSMAN Robert Gerard is spearheading a new bid to bring the Commonwealth Games to Adelaide.

The Sunday Mail can reveal key players in South Australian sport, led by Mr Gerard, are putting together a committee to build the case for Adelaide to host the 2030 event.

In a major vote of confidence, Premier Jay Weatherill has backed the push - ordering officials to meet with Mr Gerard to flesh out his plans. He said: "It is a bold idea but I think it is the sort of ambition we should have for South Australia."

The move comes four years after the Rann Government dumped a bid for the 2018 games, with former Treasurer Kevin Foley controversially branding it a "B-grade event".

SA Olympic Council president David Prince OAM, who is working on the bid proposal for the event with Mr Gerard, said Adelaide "badly needs a Commonwealth Games".

The Sunday Mail understands the chairman of the Gerard Corporation - and of the SA Games Appeal Committee - will put his case for the Games bid at the Premier's Games Appeal Dinner fundraiser on July 6.

Mr Gerard, also chairman of the Quarter Club - which raises $250,000 for SA athletes every year - declined to discuss the details of the bid when contacted this week.

Specific details such as venues for an opening and closing ceremony, an athletes' village or upgrades to existing facilities have yet to be nutted out - although Adelaide Oval could be used.

The priority will be to create a Games bid committee of sporting, business and government leaders following the London Olympics.

Mr Prince, who also is SA Games Appeal Committee deputy chair, said the bid was "very much in its infancy".

"We're looking at trying to put together a committee to start highlighting what has to be done between now and 2030 to encourage a Commonwealth Games to Adelaide," Mr Prince said.

SA is the only mainland state yet to host a Commonwealth Games. Adelaide was beaten by Kuala Lumpur to stage the 1998 Games, and in 2008 the Rann Labor Government withdrew from the race for the 2018 event, citing budget pressures. Mr Weatherill said he had asked relevant officials to meet Mr Gerard to explore the idea.

"Obviously it would do wonderful things to raise awareness of South Australia around the world," he said.

With the Gold Coast hosting the 2018 Games, Adelaide's most realistic chance is to host the 2030 event based on the need to share the games equitably among Commonwealth nations.

Commonwealth Games Association SA division secretary Barry Stanton welcomed renewed interest in a host-city bid, saying the spin-offs would benefit athletes in the state for generations.

"The option, if it were given to Adelaide, would be a fantastic boost to sport in this state," he said. "The legacy of some improved facilities would be huge. The host city would be decided six or seven years out, so that means athletes here would have all that time to get to international standard and represent their country here in Adelaide."

However, there are fears that facilities - including the state-of-the-art Marion aquatic centre - will be nearing their use-by dates by the time SA is in contention for the Games.

"It's a pity we had a government that didn't want to look at 2018 because we've now got a lovely new swimming pool - but you go to 2030 and it's going to be fairly old," Mr Stanton said.

"It should have been 2018, because now all the facilities we've got will need to be upgraded. There's a lot that would need to go on if we're going to look at 2030." Adelaide Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood threw his full support behind plans for a bid.

"I feel strongly this is a conversation that must be had - and it should be about when, not if," he said. "We are the only mainland capital that has not had the Games and it is an important element in our international branding.

"Every city that has had the Games has attracted significant Federal Government funding for infrastructure, and not just for stadiums - this is about things like housing and public transport.

"It would ensure the city gets a spit-and-polish and that it benefits before, during and for years after the Games with a surge in infrastructure."

Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond said it was an idea worth discussing but at this stage she was undecided on the merits of a bid.

"I would be very interested to see the business case and it is certainly an idea worth exploring to see what it would bring to the state," she said.
