What you miss about Adelaide...

#1 Post by aceman » Sun Nov 02, 2008 7:59 pm

For all the 'out of towners' like myself what do you really miss about Adelaide?

For me it's the following:

Haighs chocolates
Charlesworth Nuts
Pie floaters in the city
All the delicious locally made pasta
Being able to shop at Marion
A walk along the beach at Glenelg

The list could go on forever....

Of course checking out all the current devolpment!

Your avatar says it all Josh, the atmosphere was just electric.

The Melbourne event is due to expire in 2015, after a 5 year extension (originally set to expire in 2010) on a compromise basis that the event would be held at twilight. I would hope that by 2015, the state will be in a strong economical position with the mining boom taking place for the Government of the day to make a bid in attracting the race back to Adelaide's streets. The event's $40m dollar price tag, not taking into account of inflation is a hefty sum to pay each year so such a decision would have to be made wisely. Particularly moreso if Adelaide really wants to make a bid for the Commonwealth Games in either 2018 or 2022.

I miss decent coffee - big time. Even the best places here usually make coffee that tastes burnt..
The outgoing good nature of Adelaide people. Everybody here is so quiet ..
Being able to go to my local butcher and my greengrocer and my newsagent and my bakery...I HATE shopping for everything in supermarkets..
The beach, so, so much :( I never appreciated how lucky we are in Adelaide to have such decent beaches so near our city..
The Central Markets..
Cultural diversity..
The quality of restaurants and cafes. It seems to be harder to find good food here in the US..
The hills..
Farmers Union Iced Coffee. Iced coffee is quite a different animal here :?..
The Botanical Gardens..

I think my list could go on forever too.

One thing I don't miss, though, is Adelaide driving. I think the driving here in Seattle is superb compared to the driving in Adelaide.

I can understand you missing Iced Coffee though we are lucky enough over here in the ACT to be able to buy it.

Adelaide definitely has some superb restaurants but as far as drivers are concerned Canberra would have to be the tail gating capital of Oz. There are so many single laned roads and even if your going 20 km over the speed limit they will tail gate you until you reach a dual laned roundabout then scream past at twice the speed limit.

I miss Adelaide's roads and tree lined streets and not so aggressive drivers.

I miss a lot from living in Adelaide, but it is hard to tell how much is specific to Adelaide and how much is from living in a city in general. Canberra is very rural and dull - Bendigo is more alive than Canberra.

Specific to Adelaide:
- Decent restaurants that don't cost a small fortune
- Being able to get Farmer's Union at Maccas
- Rundle Mall. I haven't found anything in Sydney and Melbourne to compete with it.
- Todai Sushi King on Rundle Street
- Villi's pies

Things more general for a large city
- The sense of life you get on a busy inner city street lined with skyscrapers, shops and rows of bustling pedestrians.
- Architecture over 100 years old
- Public transport that isn't pants-on-head retarded
- Convenience retail that is actually convenient. Fast food isn't fast if it's a 10 minute detour from the main road
- Roads that are less than 100m wide....

Things I don't miss about Adelaide
- Being able to go to the supermarket whenever I feel like it and not stressing about getting there before 5.00.

Your right ATD, Canberra is very rural. I live in the Gungahlin area and I have views of the hills around me. There are even sheep in the paddock across the road (my house is on the edge of the estate) which you can hear most nights! Even on tv here it feels rural with Win, Prime and Southern Cross Ten. We don't even get TEN HD and sometimes during ad breaks there are ads about sheep flea treatments etc. Hell I even think I miss George Donikian

Sometimes I feel like I live on a farm property! I was in Adelaide in Sep and just getting of the plane you felt like you were arriving in a real city.

Adelaide has a certain character and charm that Canberra doesn't, it's very sterile here.

Here in Canberra the big supermarkets are open until midnight everyday. Adelaide's shopping hours are a little outdated.
