Adelaide bus thread!

#16 Post by The Scooter Guy » Fri Sep 04, 2009 11:25 am

How about a dedicated thread for some photos of South Australia's buses!
For a start, here's an old Beeline bus taken in the 1970s: (courtesy of Stephan Lucas)

Where were you when Croc Hunter was killed?

#17 Post by The Scooter Guy » Fri Sep 04, 2009 11:29 am

It's my official 19th BIRTHDAY THREAD!
And has been 3 years since we lost Steve Irwin!
Where were you when he was killed? I was at the 2006 Royal Adelaide Show on my sweet 16th birthday! :o

Why did I have some crazy feeling we had to share something like a birthday? Great...

Joking aside, happy birthday young'un.

ps. and Irwin died on the 4th? I had no idea about the date. Suppose that's better than one of my old high school friends who's birthday is next week on the 11th...

Monorails

#21 Post by The Scooter Guy » Sun Sep 13, 2009 12:00 pm

What if Adelaide had a monorail system like the one in Sydney?
My idea for a monorail in Adelaide would be a suspended system with trains shaped like the Pacific-Atlantic monorail from the Thunderbirds series!

Ideas on how to attract more people to SA?

#22 Post by The Scooter Guy » Fri Sep 18, 2009 8:56 pm

If I was a very rich person, I would only need 1 thing to attract more citizens to SA:
AN AMUSEMENT PARK!
Queensland has 4 on the Gold Coast and I haven't visited them since 1999 & 2001!
I could place the amusement park on this area of spare land!:

Waterslides next to Noarlunga interchange...

#23 Post by The Scooter Guy » Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:49 pm

While I was on a bus enthusiast's tour way back in 2006, I discovered these disused waterslides next to Noarlunga interchange! :o
And now they've been torn down!
Any obvious reason of why they shut down? :?

Ah, Splashdown. I really miss them - they were much better than any of the waterslides that are still open.

I remember on a very hot day I went to Noarlunga and found them closed. One of the things I regret is that I went straight home afterwards - I should've gone to Lakeside (near Hackham) as I had never been down the Lakeside waterslides. When I did eventually get to Lakeside, that too had closed down. So aside from a rather poor quality one at Marion Swimming Centre, the only waterslides left in the southern suburbs are the three expensive ones at Glenelg (which are themselves replacements for the four at Magic Mountain).
And now they've been torn down!
I share your sentiment :(

They were privately owned, and they lost money. I don't know why the council didn't take them over. Maybe it was because of the proximity to Lakeside, but if so it's very bad planning - especially as most of Splashdown was still up long after Lakeside closed.

Was Lakeside an aquatic centre? And what was it located on?

It was located on South Road next to the end of the Southern Expressway. It remained unused until a couple of years ago when it was converted in to an unsuccessful paintball place.

It was (and possibly still is) for sale and with the amount of new housing developments surrounding it, I would imagine there's a good chance it too will be redeveloped for housing one day.

No. It was competing with Greenhills (Victor Harbor) and Puzzle Park (Murray Bridge), both of which have waterslides. It had a reputation for being more expensive than either of those, though I think it was pay as you go, so would've been OK if you weren't staying long. Its main feature was some sort of toboggan track, and I deeply regret not investigating further.

BTW SA's remaining waterslides, other than the ones I've already mentioned, are at Ridgehaven, Elizabeth and Semaphore. I think they also have them at Port Lincoln and Roxby Downs, but I'm not sure.

You can still view what's left of the park on Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 7&t=h&z=16.

Captain Lou Albano passes away

#30 Post by The Scooter Guy » Thu Oct 15, 2009 9:11 pm

One of the greatest Mario actors there ever was has passed away.
This year's already had a lot of crazy celebrity deaths, but the person we lost today will probably hit the hardest for any Nintendo fan - Captain Lou Albano, who played the live-action version of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show (1989) and also provided Mario's voice for the cartoon segments, died earlier today.
With his crazy hair, deep voice and wild gestures, his portrayal of Mario was always a fan-favourite. In the opinion of some, he was even better at the role than Nintendo mainstay Charles Martinet, but sadly, after the Super Show, he never played Mario again.
Of course, the Super Show might not even be the only thing you know him from - he became famous as both a wrestler and a wrestling manager, and appeared in many of Cyndi Lauper's video clips, usually as her dad. He also made a ton of guest appearances on other shows.
Captain Lou was 76 years old. Our condolences go out to his family members and friends.
