I was thinking, with all this talk about Adelaide moving forward etc.....

Is it time that we change the name and flag for this state to reflect what we are progressive modern state not held back by our history.

What that name is and what that new flag is I'm not sure, I'm just throwing it out there.

what do people think?

How do you suppose that changing our name does that? Or even why we should want to do that? What is it about our history that you are trying to get away from? From my perspective, at least, our history -- from our unique settlement to our (at times) political and social progressiveness -- is an asset that could (and ought to) provide a point of difference.

perhaps.

I think it would rejuvenate the belief in the state, give people a representation of the state than, South Australia.

yes we have some history which is positive, we also have a shit load of baggage which is tied to the name.

my biggest problem, I cannot think of 1 name which would be better

problem is, since the end of apartheid, South Africa have imposed themselves on the world and stolen SA from us
now you cant have a conversation with someone outside the state and refer to SA without evoking confusion with the African nation.

And you expect people to know the initials "SA" stand for a state of 1.5 million people, and not a country of 50 million?
Do you know what American state an abbreviation is referring to?

I agree with the idea of geting rid of the colonial Union Jack from our state flag, bit renaming the state? that seems innapropriate and unnecesary.

This reminds me of when Patty and Selma suggested changing 'Springfield' to 'Seinfeld' to leech off his popularity. So in that vein, I suggest iStralia.

Agreed, but seriously, I think we should seize/take back/combine with the Northern Territory and call the new north to south state 'Central Australia'.

Make Darwin a Free Port and distribute imports from there to the rest of Oz by rail and road, collecting exports the same way.

Our new coat of arms could be the penguin and the paw paw beside a heap of ore.

We could still call the edges of the state The Marjins.
