The Krispy Kreme / On The Run thread

#1 Post by ghs » Tue Jul 15, 2014 3:20 pm

Krispy Kreme opened their first south australian store today on Port Road.

The store looks impressive with an American look about it.

I never understood what all the fuss is about with these donuts.

There were people camping out last night when I drove past. Honestly I would question
if any of these people are human beings.

These people are nearly as sad as the people who buy krispy kreme donuts on a trip to Melbourne
and bring them back to SA.

I'm sure they're no better than Gourmet Glaze or Dreamy Donuts. Still though in a way it's sort of good to see more international brands coming to Adelaide I suppose as it makes the city feel more cosmopolitan, so to speak.

It's a double-edged sword though as more international tends to mean less local, which takes away from the individuality of a city to some extent.

I'm not too concerned either way to be honest though!

I have to agree that it's very strange that people are lining up outside to get a donut, when there are plenty of other places they could get almost identical ones without queuing (and in many cases probably much closer to home)!

In the absence of overhead lockers, will we start to see Krispy Kreme boxes crammed under all the seats of the Outer Harbour line trains?

This whole camping-out-for-donuts affair is so pathetic.

Very sad indeed. These people need to get a life.

http://thingsboganslike.com/2010/07/07/ ... spy-kreme/
While the bogan has used doughnuts to medicate its desire for fat and sugar many times in the past, these were just ordinary doughnuts. More recently, a whole new world of bogan-style doughtnuts has opened up. Dispensing with flavour in favour of koncentrated sugar and fat, in mid 2003 the American kompany opened its first Australian store in Sydney. Not available anywhere else, rumour of Krispy Kreme’s ability to attach sugar to the SIDE of the doughnut ran wild in bogan circles. Soon, Jetstar was ferrying thousands of karry-on doughnuts per week, as intrepid bogan ants scuttled their exotic treats back to nests around Australia.
Also a warning to motorists from SAPOL to avoid this section of Port Rd due to heavy traffic at Krispy Kreme

I popped down after work for a dozen glazed doughnuts (mmmm lol)

Line wasn't too bad - about a half hour wait.

What was most surprising is that our packs are quite dearer than interstate. The Sampler pack (1 dozen glazed, 1 dozen assorted), is about $32 in Melbourne but $45 in Adelaide

The interstate media had a field day with this today.

The sad thing is that Perth doesn't have a KK, but hey that's OK, only Adelaide is 'behind the times' for only getting KK today..... :wallbash:

Port road seems like a strange location. I thought they might have gone for a more popular
location like norwood or north adelaide or glenelg.

They seem to have a good brand, I guess the owners think if they build a store then the
people will come, regardless of location.

The site was - physically - suitable for the proposal (size etc). On the Run also likely still owned the land too. The proposal was non-complying and was refused by the City of Charles Sturt before its DAP approved it just under a year ago.

Isn't the Port Road site mainly for a factory and a On The Run, they make them there and deliver them to other places in the morning and maybe noon etc - this was all the OTR have a supply.

Dont understand the "too cool for school" attitude everytime someone mentions KK. I frequently used to bring boxes back for friends when travelling for work. It was a novel treat and the sheer lunacy of bringing boxes of baked goods back on a plane added a silly element of fun.

I personally wouldnt brave the 4 degree apparent temps overnight but it's just a bit of harmless fun. I dont care much for apple products but i like the fact that we're deemed fit to have an apple store in the CBD; same goes for KK in Adelaide!

2 new stores are seto open in the next few months. one on Gouger street which we already knew about in the former Stanleys Fish Cafe and the second at Bedford Park. I'm unsure of the location, as i can't think of any appropriate sites unless they build a store at the OTR St Mary's or Darlington but then thats not bedofrd park so i don't know.

Does anyone know if the Peregrine family has outright bought the brand in SA or are just operating as franchisees for the American company? If the latter, I hope KK goes the way of Starbucks in Adelaide. Support local.
