I agree, it's not really that special.

Of course the club 199 shouldn't be retained...I can't wait to see it go. I was referring to 200 North Terrace but according to that "render" it still stands.
My bad.

It's disappointing that developers try to get these kind of developments off the ground. Look at the size of this allotment. I'm all for nice tall buildings in the appropriate places but this one makes me laugh. Has anyone considered there may be alot of bare (cement) cladding to the east and west? That would be a tragedy.

Ho Really, I have seen the proposed plans and the East and West facades all have ample glass with windows and/or balconies [running flush with the building wall]. Even the lifts, lift shafts and stairwells which abut the side are all in glass.

The interesting thing now will be what the council and adjoining neighbours say, as they often try to object with over-looking concerns and then you end up with the huge walls of concrete cladding - thanks to them!

As mentioned in my earlier thread the developer has been trying for years to buy the surrounding neighbouring sites but either they don't want to sell or they are heritage listed [the Gallerie] and can't be demolished or have mulitple owners [OPSM building] and are locked-in long leases with tenants for varying long periods. So what else choice have you got ?

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing plans yet, but glass on the east and west sides that are flush with those properties may be an issue. Yes, I agree about the disappointing aspects of the adjoining properties. The facades of the Gallerie could be retained and something built behind it (set back of course). Pity that property owners can't get together and build something substantial.

Cheers

Oh no! not another high rise in Adelaide... and another character building gone!
199 was one of the places you could go no matter what age you were and have a good time.
With sweeping brass banisters and comfy lounge chairs, the perfect place with funky jazz and soul full blues, a place where you didn't have to deal with wreckless drunk teens, agressive drunk blokes, or ditsy drunk chicks.
A place where older friends could catch up in a classy environment, sit down and have a drink or shake it to the band that would be playing downstairs.
Suits and cocktail dresses weren't out of place... It was like the casino in years gone by where you actually dressed up to go out or the place you ventured after a wedding or function because you were all trussed up!

It still had it's club upstairs for those who wanted to dance to the latest DJ's so there was something for everyone!
To many places like this are disappearing in Adelaide now, which leaves the "not teenagers anymore" roming the streets for a good place to cool their heels and enjoy a drink.
Refurbish the place i say and bring back the days "not that long ago, maybe a year or so" of warm summer nights and funky blues and jazz!

And this isn't coming from a 40 something has been, I'm 26 and simply miss a place where all were welcome!

Character Building?

Furthermroe this project had nothing to do with the demise of Club199. Club199 was shut down because from memory, the owner had dealings with bikie gangs.

199 might have been a groovy jazz club in it's day, but i'd hardly call the building it was in a 'character building'. Just looked like a relatively cheap burgandy/glass building squeezed in between two really nice buildings.

i have always disliked that building, I don't even think there would be a decent Victorian facade behind those hideous maroon panels..good riddance!

I'm a blues/rock guitarist - it does'nt phase me to see this go - better will turn up. (There is an increasing market for both jazz and blues guys).

Re the architecture - Well said Amada. It does'nt even fit in well with the neighbouring bldgs; and 2 floors in such a central CBD location - naah! We have to do better next round. The sooner the better.

ADELAIDE - TOWARDS A GREATER CITY SKYLINE.

It would be interesting to see how this proposal addresses the different set-back between Gallery and the building to the west. I hope it addresses the street better than the existing structure. Neither the setback nor the eastern blank wall belong in a precinct like southern North Terrace.

Now, i didn't say this project had been the demise of the club... i'm well aware of it's seedy ending.
And as you've pointed out, the building does stick out like a sore thumb, it's just a shame to lose what was a funky venue to more high rise?
The proposed building does look fantastic in all it's glassed glory, but it in itself looks out of place between the other older buildings?

I'm sorry but I still don't see how the old building looks better than the new one in it's place? I think the original architect for club 199 ran out of ideas and just drew a square then a half circle and elevated it. I think they totally screwed up with the entrances on either side of the glass, and it doesn't seem very inviting at all. I'm no architect but that's pretty lazy design.
