Answered your own question.

What's your source for that statistic, btw?

AtD - Which statistic? The number of staff and visitors at RAH and it being the biggest single employer in the city? The source was RAH CEO Kaye Challinger, supplied when I was manager of the East End Coordination Group (ie the East End business association) a few years ago. I would say the second biggest employer was Adelaide Uni, followed by the Australian Tax Office. :toilet: Then... ACC?

As to vitality - the presence of the RAH does a lot to keep the East End alive. You only have to look at the people there with hospital tags around their necks. My point in relation to the East End is that rather than simply transfer the custom generated by the RAH to the West End, why not develop a new lot of customers by another use of the land at the railyards site - a general recreation area as discussed. Such a use might also leave the site available for a second CBD stadium one day - an option not available if we put a hospital there.

Is that actually where they live? Or just where they were on census night? Does it include inpatients? What about medical staff on the night shift?

Isnt there a hospital on a city gateway already? Its on Nth Tce and its called the RAH !!
Never thought of that. Good point. Still, if it's a mistake, why repeat it?
I dont think its a mistake. I think that it basically makes good economic and social sense. The RAH brings in lots of people and $ which is basically your stance Stumpjumper, so will the new hospital. The gov. has an opportunity to build a world class facility for an aging population on a great piece of land. Why hold on to such a prime site for another use, like a stadium, that may not be financially feasible for another 20-30 years? There will be some teething issues, which im sure that the Advertiser will jump all over, but I for 1 applaude the governments direction on this one, along with the AO. Dont always think that way by the way. Im just so glad that this city finally seems moving forward after so may years in the gutter. Let infrastructure rain down appon us !!! :D

Yes, but let us not welcome any infrastructure at any price on any site. We are a sophisticated city, not a bunch of cargo cultists worshipping cranes on the skyline.

Need it be said that the cranes are really a reflection of deeper economic, political and cultural issues that I think concern us all when thinking about our great city. On this basis, more cranes please!!!! Anyway, what is the latest on Vic Park?
