Crane is a hammerhead. I'm guessing the reason the 100m+ buildings have these is because of the airport restrictions.
Yup, OLS and PANOPs reasons.
I assumed the Realm crane would need to stay under RTCC, not just PANS-OPS? Has an application been submitted to breach RTCC with the crane?

My understanding is that current intent for Adelaidean is to build it with crane staying under RTCC, even though the building itself is only approx 1m below RTCC. Will be interesting to see how they construct the top levels without use of the crane. They might rethink this once the building starts to rise.

You can apply for a permit to work within those heights for a maximum of three months. It'll be interesting to see how that works with Adelaidean crane wise, If they stick with a hammer head there rather than swapping from a luffing crane to a hammer head which has happened in Sydney and Melbourne in the past.
Walking on over....

Is there a page somewhere explaining the different types of cranes and the benefits and drawbacks of each type?

Understood re 3 month permits - these have been applied for and granted for numerous projects interstate, but I'm not aware of Maxcon having applied for this for Realm or having it granted. Does anyone here know otherwise? My understanding is that no project in Adelaide has ever applied for a permit to breach the RTCC temporarily or applied to have it lifted permanently. If a temporary permit has been granted, it would set a useful precedent for other projects.

This one is a hammerhead. You use it where there's a lot of airspace and it gives a good reach.

The other type, found at Gray Street or Dwell for example, is an electric luffing jib. It can sort of overcome the lack of reach since the jib can move up and down. They are typically used where airspace is a constraint, such as when multiple cranes are required or there are buildings nearby that would obscure the hammerhead jib's rotation.

Then there's mobile cranes or crawler cranes which can be set up and put to work quicker but don't have quite the same reach, visibility and lifting capabilities that a tower crane has.

The 2 cranes at Gray St are actually diesel luffing cranes. The diesel motor and the cable winding Drum and the fuel tank are all built on the same platform. Both are located in the centre of the (black) A frame. The winding drum is located nearest the cab and the motor is behind that. in the second picture you can just make out the exhaust pipe on the left hand crane -that curly pipe from the top of the motor attached to the rear of the A frame.
About once a week the crane will lift a fuel tank, with a filler hose similar to that at a petrol station, up level with the drivers cab to refill the diesel motor tank. Diesel powered cranes are used in areas where noise is not an issue and where high amperage power is not available. The most common type of diesel powered luffing cranes are made by Favco an Australian company. These are common through Australia and USA but less so in Europe. With electric cranes the power cable is usually run up the centre of the tower and allowance has to be made when adding more tower sections.

It’s crazy how much of an impact this building will have on our city. You can already see the crane when coming into the city via the train, imagine when it’s at full height.

According to Realm's facebook page this crane is the tallest freestanding hammerhead crane in Australia at the moment.

It would be a beautiful view up there. You'd feel on top of the world.

Not too sure about the above posts but from my recollection the original submission included an underground basement carpark which was scrapped for an above ground (mostly?) one, in which case they shouldn't be digging too deep. They expect to be at 7 floors up by mid-year according to a previous post so also can't see they'd be digging too deep if that's their realistic goal.
