News & Discussion: CBD Retail
Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail
Apparently there has been a wait list of retailers looking to move into Rundle Place for quite some time now. I am not sure who they are, but I don't think it will be long before the void is either filled or the centre is reconfigured to allow for a mini-major to move in.

Uni Qlo have success with it with their Mid-City store in Sydney. If anyone can make it work in Rundle Mall it would be them.

Do you think think a Timezone would work here, say over one whole floor?

I think it could work at a smaller city site, but not one so large and prominent - rent would be $$$.how good is he wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2020 3:31 pmHa... was just thinking of their Surfers Paradise Timezone site in the mall [their n.1 site in Australia and yes I know .... we are not the GC].

I know ground floor rents in Rundle Mall are $1,500 + sqm but have heard from agents that tenancies on upper floors [esp. large areas] only pay around $400 sqm - $500 sqm - so maybe a third of ground floor. Interested to know if anyone knows what Harris Scarfes rent was per sqm in Rundle Place?

Sunday mornings were for $10 lock-in at Timezone Meridian
Kids these days think a lock-in is a mobile phone contract

Shopping centres everywhere are looking to fill spaces left by retailers that are no longer trading.
Entertainment such as Timezone is one option to meet that need.
Timezone in Surfers Paradise has just been completely rebuilt. It includes much more than just video games!
I know Adelaide has had trouble in the past with fun attractions in the city centre, but I really do think it's time to give it another try, and being in such a central location, and only on level 1 (and maybe 2) as opposed to Dazzleland which was on levels 4 and 5, it really could work!

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail
As much as I'd like to see Uniqlo set up in Rundle Mall, this space won't be it. The reality is, this space will sit empty for six-months at the very minimum before centre management can find a tenant, then depending on who takes up the space, there will be at-least two to six months worth of reconfiguring to accommodate them. I know a lot of people are saying that Big W wouldn't be suitable for this space, but let's look at this practically rather than most people here just don't want to see it rather than from a snobbish perspective: Big W don't yet have an Adelaide CBD store (which means that Wesfarmers are dominating this tier of retail in the CBD; whilst they are a brand on decline and undergoing a restructure it’s a pretty well known fact that Big W's CBD stores are their best performing (QV in Melbourne is, I believe, their best performing in the country); from a centre management point of view, this will be a quick fix for filling the space, rather than it sit dormant. And because the footprint is so large, I wouldn’t be surprised if they use only one level and lease the second level off for offices. We can sit here ruminating over the what ifs of Uniqlo and Timezone but let’s be real here, neither are in contention for this.

EB Games is closing four stores in Adelaide, including the one in City Cross. It’s a shame the centre’s owners didn’t reconfigure the mall front stores for a mini major with direct access to level one, as it’s yet another example of Adelaideans not shopping up. It'll be interesting to see who plugs the gap on the other side too with Bardot also closing down.

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail
I'm surprised it's stayed open for this long, considering there is already a (much larger) EB Games across the mall in Rundle Mall Plaza. All up 19 stores are closing nation wide.SRW wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 1:18 pmEB Games is closing four stores in Adelaide, including the one in City Cross. Even more surprised that there is still two Rebel Sports in the city - City Cross and Myer Centre.
