The casino only ever seems to be busy on the weekends when there's events on at Adelaide oval, but then
they would have to pay their staff around $40 to $45 per hour on the weekends. Skycity also has to pay more for
electricity here in SA then the other operators interstate.

During the week there's not much to bring people into the city. As Algernon stated it's a lot easier for people to play pokies in the suburbs.
The high rollers from overseas are more likely to frequent the bigger cities.

I thought the state government and Skycity had an agreement which meant that Skycity had to finish the expansion by mid 2019 ?
You cant find anything to do in the city during the week? If you cant find anything to do in a city like Adelaide, then chances are high that in a city like Melbourne or Sydney you'd be shit your pants(literally and figuratively) and confine your self to a hotel room for the duration of your visit.

High rollers from overseas actually do visit Adelaide casino.
Most high rollers in the real world prefer to stay low key when they are gambling. Most of them aren't Hollywood celebrities in search of the paparazzi cameras.
Obviously a small venue like SkyCity isn't going to attract the upper echelons that places like Crown does. Crown has it's own fleet of luxury vehicles and a private jet on standby for high rollers.

I'm not sure you grasp the concept of a casino and entertainment venue, since you're comparing it to a suburban pub with two dozen pokies.
I mean, have you actually set foot in a casino?

To be fair, SkyCity Adelaide has the tacky decor of a bad pokie pub, and not much better.

And that's AFTER the upgrade of a few years back...

To be even fairer, I wasn't talking about the interior design.
Sure you can play pokies in the casino just like you can in a suburban pub. But there's a whole range of other gambling options in the casino that aren't available in the suburban pubs.
There's also a range of other 'entertainment' options in the casino that aren't available in a pub(might not be everyones cup of tea).
Besides the pokies and drinking and a few meals, they are two different venues. You can drink and eat our the back of a van while playing virtual pokies on your mobile phone..

Yep. If we're talking interior design, look at Crown. Sure the fountains are nice, they've got some high end retail/restaurants and the gas cannons are great - but venture inside to the actual gambling areas, and it's ghastly.
Garish, trashy and over the top, but still draws a crowd.

Hey!! I represent those comments.

My objection of the SkyCity Adelaide Casino's interior design is not just that it's garish etc, most casinos are like that. It's the poor execution and the awful maintenance. It looks cheap and poorly maintained. The carpets are worn and lifting in places, and some of the floorboards feel like they are made of trapdoor. None of the games tables are inviting. They don't feel like somewhere you can sit and gamble. They feel more like something that was intentionally designed to make people go away.

But to what Rev said; the two specialty restaurants are good. But they are an exception to an otherwise shoddy operation.

From the update released this morning.

Does it sound like they are going back to the government to try and get even more incentives? The Government need to find their balls and play hard ball so to speak. There are plenty of other more competent operators that would love to set up here.

Time for the state government to kick SkyCity to the curb and get a better operator in. Better yet allow two or three licences so there's some kind of a market for competition. Creating monopolies ALWAYS leads to corruption.

Anyone know when Skycity's exclusive casino license expires? Doubt much can be done until then.

Do we even need a casino, wait for the license to expire and in the meantime just build around them.
License and support restaurants, bars and accommodation next door. I don't think the casino is much of a draw card at all, a building of pokie machines isn't an outting in 2017.

I'm inclined to agree with the sentiment of the government saying stuff it to Skycity. They don't want to expand? Fine, but when there is so much work being pushed into the Riverbank precinct we shouldn't be holding onto space next door to them they don't want to use. Get some interesting development in there that will help make the riverbank a drawcard destination.

The State Government had an opportunity to ensure progress when SkyCity wanted to extend their licence. They wanted an extended, multi-year deal. They got it. What the government should have done is put them on a single year, rolling contract, thereby making them far more accountable.
