A PLANNED CBD apartment complex beset by difficulties over the past two years is under further threat as builders spent much of yesterday apparently taking down scaffolding and building materials at the Waymouth St site.
Work paused on the 25-storey U2 development almost four weeks ago when Built Envrions, tasked with its construction, pulled up stumps over an alleged lack of payment by the developer Datong.
Dialogue has been ongoing between the two parties over the past month but yesterday’s events would indicate agreement over future payments has not been met.
The parting of the ways appeared to be set early yesterday when basic works to secure the site were completed as planned by Built Environs, after which a procession of builders were seen taking away construction supplies.
A huge crane on-site has been idle for four weeks now at an estimated industry cost of $20,000 to $30,000 a week.
A source said he expected the site to be a hive of activity over the next few days, believed to refer to the withdrawal of all building work.
Built Environs has a reputation for looking after its subcontractors. A builder’s reputation will stand or fall by its duty of care to its subbies, the source said.
Late yesterday Datong claimed Built Environs had not walked off the site but would not offer any further insight.
The Master Builders Association (SA) was unable to shed any light on the dispute

I hope this project sinks and takes datong with them, never to be seen again. Then hopefully this site can be flipped relatively quickly and we end up with a vue situation.. Wishful thinking.

Looks like the crane will be coming down over the weekend.
What a mess. Surely this isn't good business for Built Environs.

It's a difficult situation for those who bought the apartments as well, it could be difficult for them to get
their deposits back.

Misconception with apartment deposits. They are never held by the developer and always held in trust for the purchaser. There will be no problem getting deposits back should other conditions have been met such as sunset dates etc.

Very large mobile crane on site.. Can only assume it's for the tower crane to come down. Yuck.

Right now (1.15pm) they are removing the climbing form work on the rear lift core .then it looks like the tower crane will come down.

So what happens now here... Clearly BE won't be building this thing, and in a week or so will have completely removed themselves from the site.
The site just stays as is until Datong sell it, or miraculously find another builder (and some money) to complete it?

As at 4.30 pm Saturday, they were still removing the jump formwork from the rear lift cores.

What impact will this have on projects now and in the future apartments wiseSmithy85 wrote:Crane is coming down.
No doubt it's an extremely significant occurrence
I know there are people in the Adelaide apartment industry that have reservations about other projects including Realm and Adelaidean
Just what I've been told know no more than that
