I am not going to take the cynical view like others, to me it seems that a $5 million loan is paving the way for another hotel operator to setup here and bring with it many jobs and rooms for tourists. You would have to think that this loan, would not only be repaid by the developer, but it will be also bring with it many $$$'s in payroll taxes and tourist dollars. Even if there was money loaned to developers for them to build office buildings for new large company headquarters I think would be valuable. We simply cannot compete with the eastern states so we have to find ways to bring the investment here.

$5 million is like small change down the back of the couch. Surely we cant begrudge $5 million here and there if it gets these projects over the line. As an expat, there is a noticeable change in the vibe coming out of Adelaide...and a large part of that I'm sure is to do with a constantly evolving skyline and amount of visible development there. It sure makes for a more interesting visit every 12 months or so.

Less than two months away! Can't wait to see this shiny glass beauty going up... and completely changing the North-Western corner of our CBD in the process.

By far the most important development in that regard is the newmarket hotel. Shame that thing appears dead.

Didn't HQ move because of Newmarket? Surely they're still underway.

I work in the industry and have contacts who are finalising the design currently (I am not directly working on this project, but I am working on a number of the taller projects in the CBD). There have certainly been delays and these were partly due to resolution of legal issues, but also due to investigations into maximising opportunities for the site. As we've seen with U2, there are never any guarantees that something will be built, but at the same time it is frustrating when people proclaim projects are dead without any basis other than 'it is taking a lot time'. Most significant building projects in Adelaide are a very long process. Specific discussion on 1 North Tce should be in that thread, not the Sofitel thread.

I meant 'taller' as in 'taller than average' - apologies if I got your hopes up! Of the taller proposals/projects around the city, I've been involved in many of them. I hesitate to use the word 'tall' as in most cities that would mean 60+ storeys. I am aware of one proposal in a central CBD location which is 1m taller than Realm/Adelaidean. I've seen the drawings but not sure whether it will proceed to planning approval stage. The election outcome may impact on some projects I'm aware of which were supported by the Labor government. Fortunately we at least still have a reasonably progressive Lord Mayor.
