I agree with Nathan, the façade is interesting and dynamic - of course, material finish depending. At least it's not another rectangular box jutted upright from the site boundaries.

This earlier Domain item (to crowdoc's link above) provides some more detail including scale, configurations, shared/serviced model and likely rental cost of such proposed new Melbourne skyscrapers.
Quite a rude awakening to understanding this concept of "purpose-built for international students"!

Domain:Skyscrapers dedicated to student accommodation, with hundreds of studio apartments as small as 12.1 square metres, are being planned and built in Melbourne.

Scary stuff. The international student boom will pass in time as Asian countries further mature and their more professional and dedicated approach to study and business overtake ourselves.
What then for such teeny apartments?

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Local students? Short-stay hotel accommodation? Reconfigured/consolidated floorplans for larger residential apartments?Wayno wrote:Scary stuff. Tbh, I wouldn't worry too much about the international student market evaporating. Though growth may slow as source countries further develop their own sectors, there'll always be a market for international study. And as an English-speaking country with highly (though could/should be more highly) ranked institutions and an enviable quality of life, we're well-placed to capitalise on it.
These student buildings are far less likely to become redundant then, say, the plethora of multi-storey car parks spread across the city...

If student numbers fall, they could just renovate and turn it into a normal apartment building.

Sign me up for the group that doesn't like it - the materials might save it, but they could also ruin it. I'm not entirely sure how to articulate it, but I don't really like that the windows just look like they've been cut out of the cladding and had glass stuck into them. I suppose it has the fact that it's quite unique for Adelaide going for it, but that isn't necessarily a good thing.
As an aside, in the render it appears that there is still a fair bit of space on that empty lot behind the proposed building. Any chance that could be used for a potential second stage?

This is expected to be approved at Thursdays meeting. This is stage 1 with a potential stage 2 directly behind.

I saw a few people onsite this morning, maybe they're doing some initial planning.

You can mark this one down as the next project to startup. Mcmahon and Hindmarsh staff were onsite this
morning doing a site inspection. There's no demolition required so it could go up quite quickly.

I can see the valley of death is near, with 4 projects starting or in SWP atm.

I agree with Ben entirely. Looks like an uninviting monolith with street appeal and seems to be a relative of commie blocks - short on design and cheep impact. The proposal for the Trims site leaves this even worse by comparison. Colour OK. I do realize that it is opinion but leaves me unimpressed.

The only saving grace with this one is that it is a 55m tacky building and not a 100m tacky building like Kodo. Hopefully they both fall over. As you say, the design for the old Trims site shows up just how ordinary projects like this are.skyliner wrote:I agree with Ben entirely. With the right materials, this could be an architectural masterpiece or it could end up looking like a dogs breakfast.noted wrote:The only saving grace with this one is that it is a 55m tacky building and not a 100m tacky building like Kodo. Kodo looks fine, it's just the blank wall which lets it down.
