and then one of the renders,

it seems fair to say the lower half of the podium is what's been built and the core is sitting where the upper half of it will be. Does anyone have any measurements of the plans? I'm interested in knowing how tall the podium is.
I'm guessing about 35 m

The podium in that render reminds me a bit of the istay precinct.

I agree this is disgraceful. Cant think of any new ones that bad in Australia..we may need to look at third world countries! Who do you think should bare the blame - the developer, the architect, those that approved it or all of the above?
All of the above. It's presence has damaged the prestige of Rundle Street. It makes Rundle Street look cold and sad. The only design that is worse than this is the chaotic and out of shape nature of Waymouth's moudly swiss cheese.

Weelllll we might have a 2nd contender, the Dwell builder is the Adelaidean builder  and if the glazing doesn't cut it??? (just a short stab at a pun) Dwell might look better

Being a hotel I think this is a different prospect, as there is ongoing benefit to presenting an appealing looking hotel.

They built 400KWS, so they're at least capable of not building urgent crap.

+1

So far it seems that every one of Kyren’s buildings is progressively better than the last. The Young St Car Park was awful, but Alpha/Palais was slightly better, 400KWS was a massive step forwards, The PWC building was slightly better (the cladding was better, the blank wall not so much) so this one should be even better considering the architects are the same ones behind West Franklin and the glass looks very similar to the one on that project.

Apparently Samaras has gone to the high court and is still trying to get the student accom tower approval next door over-turned (on the basis it was wrongly assessed).

Isn't it already approved? So what's his issue?

The developer’s alleging the approval is invalid.

I wonder whether the anatagomism to the student tower may have something to do with the hotel operator? Perhaps they’re not all that locked in and might take up lease in one of the numerous other proposals in the city rather than taking on rooms with diminished views?

Didn't the Developer use the same "set of rules" to get his own development approved?

The student accom developer should just start. Unless you can’t commence while an appeal is in progress? If that’s the case he might just drag it out until Adelaidean is at completion and by that time everyone has settled on the sales and it won’t matter to him.

I think a special exception should be made for this case where the appeal can go ahead if they agree to tear down the shoebox they themselves put up next door.

The term "shoebox" is very generous. Lots of other words come to mind when I see that thing.
