Looks like the mining boom is going to make a small mark on our skyline, no doubt the first of many to come in the next decade. This is the "Hooker House" our 8th tallest building. Should make an impact from most directions.

Nice. Some purple signage in our skyline would be different.

I also noticed URS (another mining engineering company, with BHP as one of their clients) has put up what looks like blue neon signage on the recently refurbished office building in Light Square, their Adelaide office.

The more neon signage in our skyline the better.

There's a series of articles in today's AFR property section regarding the Property Council's biannual office vacancy data. Adelaide and Hobart were the only two capitals to record a reduction in office vacancy rates. I'll try to scan and post the article tonight.

That very last sentence should be noted - "Few large office developments were expected to be built because of difficulties in getting finance."

I would put my bet that signals the end of 20-22 Currie, Planet and Yorke Commercial Campus projects.

Maybe this is true, but who really can tell whats going to happen through this year. This does mean however that when the economy does rebound Adelaide will be on of the first off the ranks to start building larger progects, rents will also stay realitivly high due to demand which will encourage developers. Other capitals will need empty office space filled first before demand will dictate more towers to be built. Really is pretty good news considering the climate.

Sorry for going off topic but why the F#*% does every article written in the eastern states have to refer to us as the 'city of churches'!?

Every time this moniker is used tremendous damage is done to our image. There are times when I wish Mike Rann would do a Stalin.

hah churches, where? we've got probably 1 "small" cathedral and it just happens to be in a lot of the pics of our skyline...

the city of Cologne is more of a city of church, and its got one of the worlds largest cathedrals:

It's a pity that most of the population of Australia doesn't understand the story behind the 'City of Churches' moniker. Should be one of the things covered in high school history of Australian states because it's pretty basic stuff. Regardless of that though, every newspaper in the country (including ours) has been using it for 120+ years and it's going to stick forever.

As for comparing Adelaide and Cologne... :wank:

St Peters is a wonderful cathedral by Australian standards both in scale and history.

I am not trying to sound like a negative bastard, but we should wait to see what the next lot of figures has to say before we start celebrating. Adelaide was late into the boom and this trend in office space might reinforce this. All i am saying is don't get too cocky and start poking your tongue out at the eastern states on SSC until we have a little more concrete evidence to support this claim.

I agree with will. It really annoys me when the eastern states use that 'city of churches' shit in the title. They write articles sarcastically as if they are patting a little kid on the head (adelaide) saying 'sure you do'. We are not taken seriously.

A bit more info on the Adelaide Bank development.

The building next door on Pirie Street (185-189) will be demolished this year, then part of the new building will be built there. Once offices have moved to the new building, the current Adelaide Bank building will be demolished and the other part of the new building will be built there. The buildings will then be joined, with an estimated completion date set at 2011.

This could potentially be great news. Will have to wait a bit longer to find out the dollar value to determine how significant an upgrade this is:
Type: Development Application Received
Application Number: DA/98/2009
Lodgement Date: 5/02/2009
Location: Stamford Plaza Adelaide, 150 North Terrace, ADELAIDE SA 5000
Description: Internal and external alterations including signage.
and another upgrade:
Type: Development Application Received
Application Number: DA/97/2009
Lodgement Date: 5/02/2009
Location: 11-13 Franklin Street, ADELAIDE SA 5000
Description: Internal and external alterations to existing office building.

Stamford Plaza upgrade sounds promising Ben.

It stands out so much and is so darn ugly that an external upgrade would be fantasic if it is decent.

Hopefully it isn't just a few basic touch-ups and instead is a significant external upgrade. Can only hope.
