It never turned out that way and to me it looks like a terrible eyesore.
That being said though, I don't know exactly what should be replacing it.
Go with their original plans, its in a perfect position. The current plaza is outdated, very underused and has the potential of becoming something great for the city (as the Festival Centre, Parliament House, Railway Station, Hyatt etc... form a nice background drop).

I agree with you, crawf.

Why not stick the screen there?
It's already an entertainment precinct anyway with the Festival Centre, Casino, Riverbank (sigh), etc, etc.

That plaza looks awful.
I've often wondered why nothing's been done with it.
What sort of heritage listing is it under? Can it be developed/altered at all, or does it have to stay as is? (a f-cking ugly waste of space).

I still can't believe it has been heritage listed, I can sorta understand about the Festival Centre but the plaza? :?. I dont find any of those 70s sculptures special at all, each to their own I guess.

Transforming the plaza into a meeting place, would boast the Festival Centre.

When I think about this more and more, The plaza would be the best place for a large meeting place with a big screen.

I highly doubt many people would be upset to see the plaza redeveloped. Though it would be a different story for other suggested areas such as Victoria Square, Hindmarsh Square and Elder Park.

Maybe this could be one of SA Greater Party's first missions.

The sculpures are foul.
Even if they were 'cleaned' and given a lick of new paint, they're still extremely dated.

I say clear the entire plaza out and start again. It's a great spot for a Fed Square style development.

Can't we somehow get it heritage UN-listed?
ha... perhaps not.

The heritage listing does allow for changes. Remember how back in 2001, a lot of the plaza was removed to open up the entrance of the Festival Theatre? I assume that a large screen, even if it was mounted onto one of the Hayek sculptures would be allowed.

Agreed.

Adelaide is a party city, so this concept would work well here. Just have a look at the 20k+ people that turned up at Adelaide Oval to watch the FIFA World Cup.

Agreed again...

Having the area revamped and turned into a permanent meeting spot for such events with a big screen would work much better than having to organise something like Adelaide Oval as a meeting place for such events every time there is the need, not to mention the fuss about council & SACA approval and even debate on whether it should go ahead.. etc etc
Using Adelaide Oval for the screening of a FIFA world cup match doesn't have the same feel & atmosphere such as at Melbourne's federation square which appears to be much more vibrant and cozy.

I'm sure I can speak for many people living here who could only wish that we have such an area which could match the scenes we saw in Melbourne at Federation SQ with the screening of WC matches.

Redeveloping the plaza wouldn’t majorly change the area and the aspect of open space which many people seem to like would still be there. It would just be a lot more attractive and the space actually put to good use.

I understand that people think that would be a good idea...but lets look at why it didn't turn out the way planned in the first place.

There are no cafes/bars around. Maybe if the entire torrens riverfront was redeveloped with cafes and the like it would make such a project feasable. Another factor is that there was nothing of interest there. Perhaps super screens would be worthwhile.

That being said though, why cant Victoria Square be upgraded to accomodate such events? Its much more appealing IMO.

If Im not mistaken the actual "vision" the ACC has is for the torrens precinct to be full of bars and cafes.
As long as they bend over and take it from Anne Moran each and every time, I cant see their "vision" becoming reality.

Its all talk and no 'do'. Where would all the bars and cafes go, because you can't touch the Northern edge of the Torrens (I think its protected for environmental reasons) and theres the rowings club structures by Morphett Street Bridge, The Convention Centre foreshore is only like 20m wide, and then its all the Festival Theatre stuff, and then Elder Park, which I would like to see left open space along its riverfront.

The Hayek sculptures have been almost universally hated since they were built. They are filthy.

The government should simply get rid of it all, and grass the area with a few trees here and there. Would look much more pleasant!
