Festival Theatre to close for 5 months due to renovations

Big upgrade (overdue) but temporary closure a blow for several arts companies and patrons.

Major renovation work will force Adelaide's Festival Theatre to close for five months next year, causing problems for several leading arts companies.
The South Australian Government had previously said the building work would not affect productions at Festival Theatre.

Festival Centre management said it had no other option due to health and safety
"The architects made it clear … that patron safety would be compromised," Festival Centre chief executive Douglas Gautier said.

"It's a massive project … of course [it was] our intention and we worked extremely hard to make sure the theatre would remain open all the way through, but ultimately it became clear that just couldn't happen."

Closure period:

Festival Theatre will close from late July 2017 until Boxing Day, as its foyers are renovated, restaurants and bars upgraded and a car park is rebuilt.

That will cause problems for several arts companies, including State Opera, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Australian Ballet.

"We are working through with them … this is thirteen months out but still it's an inconvenience, it's one that we wouldn't want to put upon any of our close partners like State Opera and the orchestra."

He said Her Majesty's Theatre could be used for some shows.
"For all of us retention of audiences is very important."

Mr Gautier said blame should not be directed at the State Government because updated details of the effects of the renovations had only recently come to light.

Compensation and potential alternatives?

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra managing director Vincent Ciccarello said he would seek compensation from the State Government and expected the figure could reach $100,000.
He said the orchestra would have to shift six shows and the Entertainment Centre could be used.

Arts Minister Jack Snelling said the Government was sympathetic to the plight of the affected arts companies.

"I have asked the Festival Centre to do everything they possibly can to make sure that those home companies aren't disadvantaged," he said.
"So we're working very, very closely with them."

The Festival Centre's Dunstan Playhouse and Space Theatre will not be affected.

They don't receive anywhere near the level of funding as sport, both in terms of facility maintenance/upgrades and operating costs for clubs and organisations. Yet they bring in more $$ to this state than sport does. The economic contribution vs. funding distribution for the arts is fucked, has been for years and it's only getting worse. Just look at how little the government invest into the Fringe compared to what they take away from it. The thing I find incredible is the level of whinging coming from taxpayers about funding going towards arts instead of health and education (and sport). $2.5b NRAH a further $1b+ towards other hospital upgrades/rebuilds, hundreds of millions towards school upgrades and contributions towards university infrastructure and whilst time is moving forwards a $550m Adelaide Oval upgrade and of recent $10m into prelim studies for a Memorial Drive upgrade and an upgrade of Priceline Stadium. Compared to what I can see as $90m upgrade of the Festival Centre (forty years in the making and even that allocation won't cover the extent of works required), $52m upgrade to the Entertainment Centre (almost ten years ago?) and $30m towards an upgrade of Her Majesty's Theatre (the remaining five million has to come from donations). The concert hall, if and when that happens, will likely be co-funded with a private investor and if they spend any less than $200m will likely be a joke (the current estimates of the underground concert hall were $75m). In regards to annual funding that certain arts organisations receive, it's been completely stripped back in recent years and these organisations largely rely on high ticket prices and private donations to deliver a standard of product compared to that of interstate organisations (Sydney Theatre Company charge $30ish for a student concession ticket compared to the State Theatre Company's $50 student/under 30 ticket - and that's just one organisation, the ASO are worse). The next time someone wants to use the argument that these organisations receive government funded AND they get a facility upgrade - do your research on the extent in which these groups have/are deprived compared to other sectors.

Footy and the performing arts both make important, albeit different, contributions to our state and our city. Just because the contribution is not immediately evident to you does not diminish the value of it.

Throw them a bit of compo FFS. We spent half a bil on the Adelaide oval and they still flog you 9 bucks for a mid strength. ASO is ballparking 100k, its not going to break the bank.

What in your opinion makes the symphony "elitist"?

While the theatre is closed, people still need to be paid. Income from performances will drop dramatically due to there being less performances, and those that they do, will require them to hire other venues. Any "compensation" would be to simply offset the financial hit they will take during the development.

From that render, excluding the casino and office tower, what exactly is so great about the money being spent on the festival theatre redevelopment? I don't see any major changes, it's just a face lift of the area.

There's a disgusting mismatch of trees/landscaping.
There's no precinct or hub for any night time/life activities.

That lower level in the foreground, near the midget palm tree, why not turn that into cafes, restaurants, bars?
Why not bring the Torrens closer to the festival theatre, and have water side dining and wining.

What a missed opportunity to do something more with a prominent location.
