I wouldn't be surprised if something is announced in the short to medium term. It probably wouldn't be a good move to announce the construction of another new hospital before the NRAH is open and fully functional. I can hear the bitching and moaning already if they were to announce it.

After spending time recently at the current RAH, this new hospital is sorely needed. The facilities and layout of the current RAH is terrible, making it very easy to get lost. The staff are superb however.

I feel months after the nRAH is open, the constant negativity and dramas will be a forgotten memory. Similar to the drama plagued saga with the airport terminal last decade.

I had to go to the rah just last week, was suffering a viral Labyrnthitis. Staff were very professional. I agree with crawf though.

Is this the start of the new hospital for women? Part of the work just next to the road (Port Road) is landscaping and drainage but rest looks like serious excavation. Perhaps we should start a new thread. Picture 29/8/2017.

No, there won't be any work on the women's hospital for years yet. That would just be clean up works, that's where the workers' huts were.

The new $2.4b Royal Adelaide Hospital unveiled

The new Royal Adelaide Hospital is the crowning achievement in the city's biomedical precinct and will represent the highest standard of health care, South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill says.

Speaking at the opening ceremony today, Mr Weatherill said the $2.4 billion facility would create jobs and be a source of knowledge, information and discovery.

"It also says something about a state when you have one of the most significant public investments sitting in one of the most prominent places in your capital city, it tells the nation and the world what your priorities are," he said.

Health Minister Jack Snelling said the project, more than 10 years in the making, would revolutionise health care through modern services and systems.

Robots will hand out drugs and cameras will be used in surgeries, but the simple organisation of the wards is aimed to speed up patients receiving care.

"The new RAH is home to the most advanced medical technology in the world," Mr Snelling says.

"Designed with the input of some of the brightest minds in the medical world, we've delivered a hospital that puts every aspect of patient care at the forefront."

Now it's up to SA's ambulance service to ferry the more than 300 patients from the old site to the new in three days starting Monday morning.

A control centre with similar protocols and procedures to a mass casualty event will be put in place for the two kilometre move across town, the health minister said.

Mr Snelling said it was the largest and most complex logistical effort in the state's medical history.

"But having said that, our ambulance service are well-trained and I have enormous faith in being able to complete this move and to do it safely," he said.

The new Royal Adelaide Hospital's emergency department will be open for patients on Tuesday at 7am, with the old site closing at the same time.

And right on cue the Liberal fanatics are out in force bagging the hospital - some still believing the old site could simply be upgraded

Marhsall was also a noted absentee from the opening yesterday.

I am no fan of S Marshall, however given the libs fighting the hospital proposal from the outset, if he had attended it would have been surely viewed as hypocritical by the same people that are accusing him of being petty now. I despise it when after change of government, a former opposition leader opens infrastructure commenced by the former government, like they are trying to take credit for it in some way. At least the RAH finally opened whilst the current government is still in power. No harm for Steve to stay away IMO

Probably planning his press release to announce a new Royal Adelaide Hospital, a tram extension to East Terrace or a task force against terrorism :hilarious:

Probably his next announcement will be some thing even more incredibly stupid like mandatory dog mufflers for all dogs to stop dog bites.

Can someone please tell me why the idea of redeveloping the original RAH seems to be looked down upon with such disdain? Is it genuinely a bad idea or is it a case of "Its a bad idea because the liberals came up with it".

It is a genuinely bad idea as it would take longer, a lot of old infrastructure around it would still be crumbling and there is A LOT of asbestos in all those buildings.
