SA GOVT GRANTS $800,000 TO UPGRADE HINDMARSH SQUARE
Minister for Urban Development and Planning Paul Holloway has approved a grant to the Adelaide City Council for $800,000 to assist the redevelopment of the northeast corner of Hindmarsh Square.
Mr Holloway says the upgrading of the area adjacent to the new Crowne Plaza hotel and apartments includes a new promenade, seating, planting and a shared-use pavement area off Grenfell Street.
“The new promenade will also be a great venue for outdoor dining and seating, near to the lawn areas of the northeast corner of Hindmarsh Square,” Mr Holloway says.
“A new feature will be an interactive art work/water feature to introduce an element of play into the landscape.”
Mr Holloway says the area around Hindmarsh Square has attracted increased residential development in recent years, and the Adelaide City Council’s planned upgrade should deliver additional quality open space in this part of the City.
Improvements to the quality of public space in Hindmarsh Square is important to encourage more people to use the northeast corner since the closure of the cinema complex, he says.
“The development of the Crowne Plaza complex presents the ideal time to upgrade this well-known public space,” Mr Holloway says.
“Quality public spaces are the key to the re-invigoration of our public life, as we have seen with the recent upgrades to North Terrace and Pulteney Street.
The Adelaide City Council received a $220,000 Places for People grant in 2007 to redevelop the northwest corner of Hindmarsh Square.
The Planning and Development Fund supports projects through the Open Space and Places for People grant programs.
The grant programs are available to South Australian councils to strategically plan, design and develop public and open spaces of community significance.
The latest grant for Hindmarsh Square builds on the $3.275 million provided already this year from the P&D fund to support Adelaide City Council projects worth $6.67 million that will beautify key public spaces in the State’s capital.

Hindmarsh square would have to be one of the best looking squares that we have in Adelaide. Would be great if the council could replicate and allow the construction of mixed use buildings across all 5 squares.

One can only hope...

Hines deserves a 10/10 in regards to how close the real life construction is when comparing it to the render!

I like it.

can I point out that, IMO, this is looking very smart indeed. I love it. The eastern tower has always looked great and is finished off nicely. I had some reservations on the western tower (caus of the square windows and amount of exposed concrete started to look a little cheap), but when I went past yesterday, its been painted over nicely and the balconies look very smart. Once that part of the square is done up, it will be quite the fashionable place to live. Just maybe have to clear out the young kiddies undertaking their chemical transactions

Will get some more pics after xmas. I told my family to buy me a new memory card, caus it seems cheaper than storing the photos on CD or DVD
