$10m West Lakes vision

GRAND PLANS: An artist's impression of the $10 million community and apartment hub earmarked for land at West Lakes.

THIS is the first image of what a $10 million community and apartment hub earmarked for West Lakes could look like.

Charles Sturt Council wants to build a new library and community centre, possibly on council-owned land off Brebner Drv, at Midcourse Reserve.

The council is considering entering into a partnership with a yet-to-be decided developer, with the council likely to contribute $4.5 million towards the joint venture. Charles Sturt CEO Mark Withers said working with a developer would allow the council to "deliver an outstanding facility for only a fraction of the cost to council and ratepayers".

"The cost of the community hub will be subsidised by selling a portion of the airspace above it, which could be developed as apartments, built and sold by a private developer," he said.

The council will start consulting the community on its plans, after elected members endorsed the proposal at a meeting on Monday (May 2). A concept image has been released.

Mr Withers said there was not enough space at the council library, which the it leases from Westfield West Lakes shopping centre.

"West Lakes Library is the most used community facility in our city, however, the current facility is old, cramped and costly to council," Mr Withers said.

"It makes financial sense for libraries and community centres to be owned rather than leased by council."

The council has included $100,000 in its 2008/09 draft budget to further investigate the hub proposal.

With all these facilities and apartments going up in the West Lakes area, the government needs to build a spur line to the suburb asap.

Btw the artists impression looks quite nice.

They don't know where they'll build it, but Midcourse Reserve is speculated to be the location of the community centre. I think its on Brebner Drive adjacent the mall. It's the only park in close proximity to existing high rise development large enough to accomodate the centre.

Quite a few bldgs 8 or so levels proposed, approved, going up or gone up in W.L. One would think that a significant population growth is afoot coupled with all the trappings. AAMI proposal also adds to this. Would love to see a rail spur here - perhaps linked to Grange line somehow. (A little round about however). The lake area a great magnet to development IMO.

Would like to see a map of all the mid rise blldgs mentioned in this thread.

A far cry from the old days when it was just a mosquito infested swamp.

Appears to be south of the building that Dick Smith was in before it relocated into the Mall - by the large townhouse cluster bounded
by Beeston Way, Sportsmans Drive & the reserve / Brebner Drive. Unless they are thinking of bulldozing the ex-DSE building, and
using most of that site, as the reserve is well - used. I was there today - if I'd read this first, I would have checked it out!

Unbelievable! The ironic part to this one is that the only a few years ago the council fought the developers of Infinity tooth and nail and it ended up going to court because they didnt want more than 2-3 storeys on the lake. Now they are actually proposing to joint venture probably a 8 -9 storey development there and most are the same elected members who objected to "high rise" on the lake - f****ing hypocrites!

There's nothing hypocritical about blocking a development that you have no stake in and then approving one that you do, that's corruption not hypocrisy... oops did I slander out loud?

I used to have a ball there as a kid - playing wide games in the sandhills, hunting for lizards - never thought of it as a mosquito-infested swamp. :(

One man's mosquito infested swamp is another man's pristine wetlands.
