An emergency meeting between City of Port Adelaide Enfield, the State Government and Cedar Woods has failed to save Shed 26. Demolition to occur within the next few weeks. Sad to see a lack of effort by decision-makers to save the structure, even if significant work and investment would be required to save it.

The roof is about 80% gone.

Photos from adelaidenow show that demolition of the structure started at about 8:30am today. IMO a wasted opportunity to create something unique and draw in visitors.

It is an interesting one. If I was relying solely on the photos of the Shed that get shown online then I would probably be of the view that it is ugly and just to knock it down. But it is one of those buildings that when you see it in person you get a whole new perspective, particularly looking out across the water at it in context with the rest of the Port. There is just something about it, and having seen what other cities have done with similar buildings then I tend to agree. The fact that Cedar Woods is the developer is also maybe swaying my opinion. The opportunity at Glenside has been totally wasted on them.

Shame.

I hope that whatever replaces it mimics the sawtooth roof.

From the latest plans looks like it will be high-density, low-quality modern box future-ghetto residential apartment blocks with no redeeming architectural merit. Fantastic.

Odd how people can be thrilled with boring residential development in one spot but upset that across the river the same thing is going to be built.
The whole area is a wasted opportunity and will be nothing but boring suburbia.

I think it's great it's being torn down. Long may the typical South Australian's tears fill the Port river.
You reap what you sow. Until people wake up, which in this state by the time that happens we will probably be fighting to re-establish Adelaide as one of the major city's of Australia.

Bring on the residential development, but retaining the heritage features and vibe of the Port are the only way to avoid another soulless suburb of ticky tacky little boxes. Midrise or not.

Agree with your last comment. If you look at other port renewal projects, whether that be in Sydney, New York or San Francisco - the best one retain and enhance elements of the old port facilities for public and common-use space (retail etc.). Failure to do that at the waterfront at the Port will result in a desolate sub-standard residential development a la Gold Coast or Perth.

The interstate-based developer doesn't give two sh*ts about the Port or SA, they just want to make a profit and without a strong guiding hand by a public-interest authority sh*t is all we will get. Thankfully the woolsheds are still banked for when we get are act together and develop a proper masterplan for the port redevelopment. A shame that a large part of the Ports best natural asset (the river itself) have already been wasted.

Why, do local developers deliver something special? One look at developments in the City and shit is all I see.

And I agree, the best part of the Port has been wasted....on residential development.

Even third world and developing countries can get their act together for urban renewal projects. Too hard for Adelaide though. Lets just build houses.
