IMO Aldi will fill the gap that Franklins left when they exited the SA market. Their supermarkets are very basic, but you can get some amazing bargains. When I was in Melbourne in January, I bought a 1.5L bottle of water for 60 cents, took it to the tennis, where I was able to keep filling it up at their water station. Best 60 cent investment ever!Torrens_5022 wrote:Aldi offers a basic line of groceries mainly - I doubt this would really effect the IGA and Foodland supermarkets that much, you would go to
Aldi for your basics Foodland and IGA are more of a local convenience and/or a place where you can get a better range of items - eg the Deli department at some Foodland's is far better in range and quality and generally better priced then Coles and Woolworths. Aldi will compete with the the supermarket brand range of items, which really were initially a response to Aldi's arrival in Australia.
Aldi is not going to be everyone's taste (hence why I think Foodland will be ok, especially the non-Drakes ones), but for those on a budget, they will be able to get some pretty reasonable groceries at very cheap prices, without the need to sign up for a membership or buy in bulk (though their bulk deals are amazing too).
