I totally agree Shuz. Also if you look at the images the walk is quite long and steep with hundreds of stairs needed to get to the uni itself. It reminds me of mid-levels in Hong Kong where they have a 800m escalator [which runs uphill from 6am-10am and downhill from 10.30am-midnight - like our former Southern Expressway]. The images don't show any but you would expect escalators/lifts here, right?

Basically they were short sighted when they plonked the private hospital/margaret tobin centre/carpark where they did. Had that not been there they could have easily curved the train line up flinders university drive and then either cut across pine plantation and ring road or more likely keep going up university way into the main carpark in the central campus.

But this is bound to happen with our lack of an infrastructure planning department which has long term plans. We are very much private developer oriented and also short term infrastructure planning based on government 3-4 year terms.

I don't think University Drive was ever considered a feasible route; to get the line further at an acceptable grade it needed to continue along Flinders Drive. That's not prohibited by this proposal, but it's still a lack of forward planning to amass facilities here if it's possible in 30-50 years the line may move. But there's never been any confirmation of such a plan, so they're fair to proceed. In terms of the proposal, it's certainly less inspiring than the 'Chatswood-inspried' line they were throwing around months ago. That said, there's nothing bad that can't be undone and it's a decent foundation on which to grow. In terms of interconnection with Central, if money's been thrown around, I'd suggest a short gondola lift or aerial tram à la Portland's OHSU rather than trying to engineer the rail there.

Yep. The obsession with always planning for some sort of utopian future is going a bit far here... they probably have no expectation that the line will be extended in the next century and that's probably realistic. Something like a gondala would be a great little idea.

If they can actually pull this off in the next 10 years it will be a fantastic addition to the southern hub.

They should move to making the Marion Shopping Centre - Flinders Interchange - Flinders Uni into a high frequency bus corridor, with digital bus stops, aligned bus timetables and a frequent train service to the city via the Flinders Line. Flinders Interchange can also be the new terminus for many southern services that currently run along South and Goodwood Roads, such as the G buses and the 7-series buses. This would save valuable contract kilometres and speed up travel times.

The government has today announced a planning study for a Flinders bus interchange that will hopefully be the start of the realisation of this vision.

In the article the Govt seems to be favouring Tonsley as a bus hub by saying they have “safeguarded” land for it. I would have thought Flinders/the end of the train line would be a more (or at least an equally) logical choice to safeguard land for it as well?

The first stage of the Flinders Village project appears to be about to commence.

It will be a medical research building.
Flinders Health and Medical Research Building

Flinders Village will commence with the development of a flagship Health and Medical Research Building, amplifying our longstanding contributions across the health, education and medical sectors into the future. It will promote high-performing research outcomes which positively impact on healthcare in South Australia, nationally and globally.

Client:
Flinders University

The Flinders University Health and Medical Research Building (HMRB) will be an advanced health research facility incorporating wet and dry research laboratories, work areas and public space. The first building on the new Flinders Village Campus, HMRB will house researchers from the College of Medicine and Public Health and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

The building will be a place of excellence in research and will highlight the work conducted by Flinders University by putting it on display. The state-of-the-art facilities will be world-class and will celebrate human centred outcomes.

Due for completion in 2023, the HMRB is targeting both International WELL Building Institute and LEED ratings.

The HMRB will promote a considered Indigenous agenda, will be culturally safe and will connect the Flinders University Sturt and Bedford Park campuses to the Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders Private Hospital as well as the new Flinders train station.

Ultimately, the HMRB aims to maximise researcher and clinician interaction with the broader University and the public. In accommodating new technologies and innovation the building will foster a collaborative environment that allows people to work together creatively and learn from each other to build upon and showcase research on the world stage.

Is this the project that’s being built right next to the Flinders Railway Station?

Judging from the masterplan available on the project website, I think you are correct.

Continue it across Sturt Gorge and it could be a stunning tourist attraction. Also, people around Happy Valley could get to the train station.

Construction of the first stage of the Flinders Village starts now, but I haven't seen any plans submitted to SCAP? Was this approved by council? Or maybe it's early works before the main development is approved.
Construction starts at Flinders health and medical research building

Hardhats and steelcaps will be worn at uni this week as work starts on the flagship of the $1.5bn Flinders Village plan.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held today for the 10-storey Health and Medical Research Building, the jewel of the $1.5bn Flinders Village development.

Vice-chancellor Colin Stirling said the start of construction was the culmination of several years of detailed planning.

“I am proud to say that Flinders University has continued to thrive even through these most difficult of circumstances created by the pandemic,” he said.

“We are emerging from the crisis stronger than before with exceptional student outcomes and with our research performance showing exceptionally strong growth.”

The building will house more than 650 workers, including researchers in medicine, public health, nursing and health sciences. They will explore infection and immunity, mental health, pharmacology, cancer, health delivery and other fields.

There will be wet and dry laboratories and bioplatforms for genomics, robotics, mass spectrometry, insectary and other life science avenues.

The project will support 750 construction jobs, with a target of 2024 for the building to be operational. The project is underpinned by the state government allowing a portion of the university’s campus to become freehold land, attracting private investment to fund the building.

A consortium led by Tetris Capital, with Amber Infrastructure, International Public Partnerships and National Australia Bank will pay for the building, with construction by Hansen Yuncken and design by Architectus.

Flinders will cover the fit-out and lease the building for 25 years, after which it will take ownership.

The project will have high sustainability objectives, including being all-electric other than laboratory gases.

Flinders has a strong partnership with Indigenous people and the colour palette for the building has been created in consultation with the Kaurna people, especially elder-in-residence Lewis Yarluburka O’Brien.

Symbolically highlighting the partnership, bush medicine seeds and seedlings will be planted during today’ ceremony.

The plants would be the nucleus of an indigenous garden “that will be a cultural focal point of the final development,” Professor Stirling said. A major research strand will concentrate on health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities.

The building would advance Flinders’ vision to be known as one of the most innovative campuses in the world, Professor Stirling said.

“It’s doubly important as it marks the first development at the heart of what will become Flinders Village, a vibrant health, medical research, education and lifestyle precinct built around the new Flinders rail station,” he said.

The village will grow to include student accommodation, retail, recreation, entertainment, aged care and retirement living.

Here's the Official announcement. There's not much new information, but I did notice the following:
  • It opens in Q2 2024, and seems to be sitting next to the Margaret Tobin centre.
  • $255 million project
  • 22,000sqm building spanning 10 storeys
  • Designed in consultation with Kaurna elders. The building’s narrative will reflect Rainbow Country, captured in the colour palette evocative of the vibrant sands of the Kaurna Yarta.

An unusual crane base is being installed.

The site is two levels. They've dug a hole in the top level and put the crane base inside the hole.
