I can't get a good view of the intersection on Google Maps - was the old intersection (pre-1998) a triangle junction or a just a standard T-junction?

I'm not exactly sure what a triangle junction is.

The original intersection was a Y but with no westward deviation to the top left hand side of the Y (Kadina road continued straight north while Highway one deviated to the north-northeast). Across the top of the Y was the access road for Snowtown/Kadina traffic so in a sense that would make a triangle.

The current exit to B85 can be viewed using Google Street View.

I've found some information on the upgrade to B85 between the above intersection and Kulpara. Until recently this was a terrible section of road, narrow and undulating. It took a long time to complete the upgrade and the following document offers some insight as to why.

Yeah - that's the triangle junction I was thinking of. They are quite common in Victoria but not over here in NSW.

Thanks for the pdf - interesting reading! I love this stuff.

Safer highway for Christmas

Wide centrelines and roadside hazard clearing will continue along the Dukes Highway this summer in the next stage of works to reduce the crash risk for drivers.

In the coming months another 58 kilometres of the wide audio tactile centre lines will be installed between Coomandook and Bordertown.

Along the same section of road a six-metre clear zone will be established to roll out the safety buffer along the entire length of the highway.

These improvements are designed to reduce both the likelihood and consequences of driver errors.

Other safety improvements completed to date include:

- six new and 11 upgraded rest areas

- 3.5 kilometres of pavement reconstruction/rehabilitation

- three new and four upgraded overtaking lanes

But is any of it actually being duplicated? If not, shouldn't thread be renamed?

It might happen before Port Wakefield is bypassed.

Then again, the sun might become a red giant before Port Wakefield is bypassed.

I think that's about right, drsmith. Sad but true.
