The desto "Shuttle Tram" is rather silly imo for a service that receives a lot of tourists.

Good point AtD,
The desto actually alternates between "City West" & "Shuttle Tram" - I happened to hit the shutter button as "Shuttle Tram" was visible.

They are noisy at the back over the traction wheels and the noise is high piched which is annoying.

im assuming thats the west terrace stop, so they can have 3 trams for everyone at hq?

Yes, the shuttle trams terminating on the centre track, with the outer tracks for through services to the Entertainment Centre / Glenelg.

aha, now that would be ideal for the other end of the shuttle as well to make the turn around quicker and easier

Turnback sidings are slow and disruptive to use. A terminating platform is much better for a shuttle service. But better still would be running a through service all the time - it's ridiculous to run a shuttle service when it's standing room only all the way from Glenelg!

Crossovers were used everywhere on the Adelaide (and all other systems in Australia) for short workings and specials. Actually, they were quite fast even when one had to change trolley poles, manually wind destination blinds and change the steps from one side to the other.

However, if you have the room and the money, then a siding allows for flexibility....the shuttle doesn't have to get out of the way of an early or late tram in its way. It is also better if there is likely to be a lot of people using that particular spot to get on and off.

The other thing is that in effect there are two services being run - the shuttle and the bay tram.

They are not mutually exclusive so that if you think that more trams should run to Glenelg (and the problems with delays at crossings can be overcome) then that can happen without having to reduce the city shuttle services.

The city shuttles are still pretty full even though they only go to Terrace to Terrace - which means that if the shuttles were not running, those extra people would somehow have to fit on the Bay Tram.

Basically at the moment we need both.

Ah well, there's always the option of bringing back the 99B to compliment the shuttle trams :D
