Tender called for 16km duplication of South Road to Sellicks Beach

Work to deliver Adelaide residents as far south as Sellicks Beach a duplicated South Rd has begun with a tender called today to plan the project.

Stage one of the works – 10km from Griffiths Drive Seaford south to Aldinga, to be built at a cost of $305 million – will eliminate the narrowing of South Rd into two lanes after the Victor Harbor turn-off.

“The duplication of Main South Rd is an important project that will improve road safety and ease traffic congestion,” Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephan Knoll said.

Stage 2 of the project, another $130 million promised but not yet funded, will continue the duplication for around 6km from Aldinga to Sellicks Beach.

Today’s tender is to plan for both, but the full cost will not be known until it is awarded.

When both stages are completed the dual-lane carriageway for southern suburbs residents will run continuously from the Flinders Medical Centre to Sellicks Beach.

Currently, beyond the Victor Harbor Rd turn-off, Main South Rd is mainly a single carriageway arterial road, despite being one of the principal traffic corridors to the Fleurieu Peninsula.

It is also the major CBD commuter route for the southern suburbs, used by an average 17,000 motorists every day, and this is expected to grow to 40,000 vehicles in 10 years.

In committing to the stage one works in 2017, the previous government said it had been made a priority because there had been 77 crashes – including one fatality – on the stretch of road between 2010 and 2016.

The project was funded in this year’s State Budget, and will create 165 jobs over three years, many from the southern suburbs of Adelaide when works begin in 2019.

Over two stages it is one of the longest highway duplication projects in the state and has caused controversy because the Government must acquire land to widen the road by about 30m.

The project already has an active community group lobbying for the best outcome for residents, with 1300 people joining Facebook’s Main South Road Seaford to Sellicks Action Group.

Since funding was announced the group has made a focus ensuring that underpasses are used to improve local east-west access. Mr Knoll said the planning study would prioritise consultation with the communities affected.

They should rename Victor Harbor Road to South Road so it can get some funding to be duplicated.

Any news on when the landscaping is going to commence? The Port Rd/South Rd intersection is a pretty grim wasteland right now. The crooked goal post sculpture installation doesn’t help much either.

The A32 between Roseworthy and Tarlee , also B82 between Tarlee and Clare needs to be upgraded too because Clare Valley region is also one of South Australia's tourist regions.

I guess there are a number of criteria to consider in which roads are eligible for upgrade, and how big upgrades are needed.
  • Total road capacity and demand - that's why the main North-South Motorway needs to be finished
  • High crash rate - is cited as a problem for this section
  • Doesn't look classy for tourists
  • Excessive wear due to increased heavy vehicle traffic
  • etc.
The Truro bypass needs to be done because the rules have changed to permit road trains through that hilly bit and the main street of a country town.

The Thiele Highway seems to have a higher crash rate than the Horrocks Highway in the Roseworthy area (but I haven't checked the data). Both roads are popular with cyclists, heavy transport and caravans but don't have significant shoulders to help them all get along together, nor overtaking lanes.

Last I was in the Clare region, the road was atrocious...almost dangerous with patches and uneven surface. Hardly befitting of major highway status. I understand though the major money needs to go into the main freight and interstate routes. There needs to be a different funding model for roads in general, aside from the one off major constructions such as urban freeways and duplications.

What does this sentence actually mean? If it means that there is dual carriage way all the way then isn't it already dual carriage way well past Flinders Medical Centre?
Or does it mean the traffic will be non-stop? Which in that case with no extra works being done at the southern end of the Southern Expressway or at the Victor Harbor turn off to remove the traffic lights that won't be the case.

Main South Road is currently dual carriageway (with traffic lights at various places) from Flinders to Seaford, but only a single carriageway from Seaford through Aldinga to Sellicks Beach (and beyond).

SBD, the point I was wondering about is why the say it starts at FMC.
Couldn't they say it will be dual carriageway from the CBD to Sellicks Beach?

Is it because that's where South rd changes to Main South rd?

Sorry, I missed that point. I guessed it is because that is where Main South Road will start once the North-South Motorway corridor is completed.

So those crooked posts are supposed to be like that? Thought they would at least attach some of those see through colour panels to them.

They are back to work on the Darlington site and within a few months south Bound traffic will be using the lower sections of the road upgrade.
