Not sure why our state govt constantly refers to level-crossing removals as 'public transport projects' when train users suffer most of the inconvenience and disruption so that the cars get all the benefit. :sly:
I guess it's the same reason that bike lanes come from the meagre "cycling budget", even though the primary purpose is to stop cars from being held up by slower cyclists. A bike lane means the cars can reach the next red light sooner.

Because it crosses two very major roads, Cross and South Roads. High priority.
Also Cross Road will be the main, direct link between a completed Motorway and the South Eastern Freeway.

Has this been decided? Have the land owners adjacent to that intersection been advised there will be an interchange on their doorstep? Are there plans for land aquesition? Are there plans then for the widening of cross road from the toll gate to South road? What side of cross road will be cleared to make way for multiple lanes of heavy vehicles? All very well to discuss Emerson part in isolation, but the knock on effects are enormous. As I said, they need to stop planning this in small isolated components.

The plan (as I understood it) was to lower the Seaford train-line below Cross Road as part of this process. Believe me, if you've ever travelled through that section of Cross Road during peak times, it's hell (even off-peak it's not great).
I'm trying to imagine the staging.

I can't envisage the existing South Road overpass being removed before a new overpass structure is built on an adjacent alignment. Similarly, it's hard to imagine the existing rail line being closed before the new sunken section is complete, again adjacent to the existing line in the vicinity of the road intersection. Then there's the issue of the existing overpass approaches in relation to constructing the sunken rail line. The new road overpass would likely have to be built before the rail component could be completed.

The existing overpass will remain as is. It will be the southbound carriageway, and a new overpass will be built to the west to accomodate the northbound carriageway.

It does make sense for cross road to be a part of the metro ring route take traffic from the SE freeway to the southern stretches of the NS motorway... However, the resulting interchange if done properly, complete with rail crossing at Emerson and proper freeway style interchange will be a massive undertaking and wipe out a huge parcel of land on all approaches. What concerns me is that it will be treated in Isolation relating to the South road project, without forward vision for the treatment of cross road. That will be another battle entirely. This point, and the treatment of the Thenarton heritage area are probably the most difficult and should be part of a big picture, not single projects as per the rest of this corridor.

I can't help but feel a tunnel would be best. It'd be a long one at just under seven kilometres, and to be brutally honest, probably something that the State Government won't have the balls to even consider any time soon. However, despite its limitations it'd keep the demographic around there reasonably happy, would not change the character of the area and take a lot of freight off other roads, as should be its purpose.

I think it's a given, there will be a long tunnel constructed as part of the NS Motorway project. Especially around Henley Beach Road and perhaps around Edwardstown.

Most of the new Northbound road between Torrens Road and the Outer Harbor line is completed. The switch should happen in 2 weeks or so.

Here is the latest progress drive-by video.

I drove southbound along the route last Wednesday.

It's one of those routes though where one has to concentrate more on driving than on rubbernecking the works so even though having recently seen it, your video is very much appreciated.

I guess I'm due for my half-yearly bump of my Southern Connector idea - designed to avoid these very issues....

Some idea for the cost of that can be gleaned from the $1.9bn Perth Freight Link project.

https://project.mainroads.wa.gov.au/per ... fault.aspx

The Fremantle Tunnel element consist of twin 3.3km long 12m diameter tunnels each capable of accommodating 3 lanes but will be initially be configured as 2 traffic lanes + emergency stopping lane. The budgeted cost of the Fremantle Tunnel component is $1.3bn but is only expected to require a dozen or so property acquisitions. The $1.3bn cost includes two grade separations beyond the northern end of the bored tunnels (High St and Marmion St Fremantle) which will most likely be achieved by a trench section.

The $1.3bn above does not include funding for the Roe Highway extension (Roe 8 ). This is a separately funded component of the broader Perth Freight Link project.

Checked out the Outer Harbour line overpass video at the T2T gathering at the Brickworks last night, it will be done in 20 days and nights during January, great animation!

Cheers for the update, am looking forward it seeing it. I've been hassling T2T about it as they first said it would be available on their website on 1 August and then it was mysteriously changed to 'coming soon'. Spoke to them yesterday and it should be up on the website on Monday:

20 days is incredible though - will be very interesting to watch...
