It is literally called Cross Road. It's got a good name for a connector between the freeways. If it gets built, it should also go a bit further west and connect Anzac Hwy too.
Another advantage of the Cross road tunnel option is that it could also be easily connected to the Airport. This could potentially reduce the need for the inter-modal air-freight hub proposed for Monarto as part of GlobeLink.

Airport link.jpg
The extension west beyond the N/S motorway is just duplicating what will already exist with the N/S motorway being just a few km further to the east. Surely not worth the expense of such a long, additional tunnel? There will already be 2 or 3 options to exit the N/S motorway and head to the airport.
The airport should have a motorway link directly to it though as the main road route to/from it, along with train/or tram, as opposed to the crappy suburban roads at the moment.
Let's not pretend the airport isn't a major economic contributor and employer in this state, and we are obviously stuck with it in it's present location for many decades to come. So why not make the best out of it, significantly improve the infrastructure around it, better connecting it with other significant areas such as the CBD, Port, and so on..that can only lead to an increase in economic benefits and employment.

The tunneled portion of my proposed route west of the North-South corridor is relatively short.

That said, it might be more effective to connect the North-South Corridor and Airport via the Richmond Road corridor. That would remove the duplication you mention, and would also provide better access to the airport from the city and northern suburbs. The Airport site is only about a kilometre west of the North-South corridor via Richmond Rd.

Under this eventuality, the North-South Corridor would likely need extra lanes between Richmond and Cross Roads in order to accommodate the additional traffic travelling between the Airport and South-Eastern Freeway.

The Richmond road option is definitely closer, and need not be a tunnel as your legend indicates. Significantly widening Richmond Road and providing a trench west of the Motorway would enable direct access to the airport on a much shorter route. Agree this will eventually lead to congestion on that section of the motorway requiring more lanes. This is why we need a more comprehensive plan for the whole of the metro area, and freight connections, as Im not sure the future needs of the airport are even being considered. I doubt much thought will go into the freight needs of access to Adelaide airport for now as the Libs are probably still thinking the dedicated freight airport will eventually take care of this and remove the need for such a link.

A question for those who know about such things:
Why do the proposed North-South Corridor tunnels have to follow the existing road route of South Road? Is there a possibility they could take a shorter, more direct route underground, then have appropriate exits at existing roadways?

What is the legality of the proposed tunnels being built under private property? How far underneath private property would the tunnel need to be for it be deemed public domain? Is their precedent for this form of design?

I think we're getting carried away with idea that literally every route needs to be intersection-free. There are many capacity improvements that can be made before travel times need that sort of intervention. Not to mention, much more freight should be on rail rather than road. And also, the airport itself is contemplating several additional access points which will relieve stress on any single point.

The amount of freight the airport takes is minimal, hardly enough to justify a tunnel. Freight is much more likely to go to Outer Harbour.

To add to what Norman said, the quantity of freight sent by air is low, but the value is high.

Just hearing that another wall has broken on the Darlington Road works this afternoon.

Looks like Croydon Kings are on the move.

They’re playing a farewell game at Polonia Reserve today and FFSA have done a decent tribute video for the club on Facebook.

Not much left to be demolished now. Southbound corner Regency/South has the corner building (now empty) & 3 other dwellings along South Rd plus a business dwelling further along near the soccer ground.
Northbound is the shops on the corner of Pym/South rd plus 2 other dwellings further Northbound. (Old machinery business I think)
Everything else is gone along that patch of South Rd.

I guess one of the advantages of Regency to Pym’s construction phase, aside from being a much shorter section, is that there’s no time-consuming excavation or as many extensive relocations of services. Fingers crossed this one will be pretty straight forward!

That shows that quite a bit of effort went into planning the MATS plan - it was not just a "big hands, small map" thought bubble before an election.

I wonder if anyone has done or is doing that level of planning for the North-South Motorway, GlobeLink hills bypass or links from the South Eastern Freeway to the North-South Motorway (either east and north of the city or south of it).

Planning? In South Australia? Good one
