Evening all,

More international flights look to be on the way, the next year and a bit could be really good for Adelaide...
Both will actively encourage an airline to begin flying the route, which Adelaide mayor Stephen Yarwood said would boost tourism in both cities.

Mr Yarwood said the city was keen to give more support to Christchurch, particularly during the earthquake recovery.

Adelaide Airport managing director Mark Young said a direct service was appealing.

"A direct air service to Christchurch Airport will definitely be an attractive offer to South Australians," he said.

"They know Christchurch is on the doorstep of a winter playground, as well as beaches and outdoor adventures in the summer."

Just for the record...

When CX105 touched down yesterday morning (Thursday 4th), it may have only been Cathay Pacific's 3,578th flight to Adelaide but it marked the 20th anniversary (to the day) that the Hong Kong carrier commenced flights to SA.

Image

The flight, as 20 years ago, was captained by a South Australian. In 1992, it was Captain Trevor Burgess, while Captain Ben Briggs was at the controls yesterday.

On 4 October 1992 Cathay Pacific commenced flights to Adelaide with a weekly service to Hong Kong. Passengers were encouraged into taking “shop overs” en route to European and Asian destinations, and holiday packages including flights, hotels, tours and transfers were sold from $1,219 per person.

Since that time, Cathay Pacific has increased its flights from one to seven per week, steadily increasing its carriage of passengers and cargo. The Airline anticipates it will bring 50,000 people into Adelaide during the 2012 calendar year.

“Like Captains Burgess and Briggs, many Cathay Pacific pilots are Australian and indeed since 1994 many have been trained at Flight Training Adelaide. In fact, by the end of this year more than 800 Cathay cadets will have graduated from the facility.

Cargo has also played an important part in the airline’s business in South Australia, particularly in the export of seafood with crayfish, tuna, oysters, mussels and kingfish shipped out to Asia and Europe.

Let's hope Cathay Pacific stays on for another 20 years (ramping up the flights too...).

Key Dates:
  • October 4, 1992 Cathay Pacific makes its first flight into Adelaide with a Boeing 747 aircraft (CX105)
  • October 4, 1992 CX104 departs with crew of three South Australians in the flight deck.
  • June 1993 Cathay Pacific increases frequency to two Boeing 747 flights per week from Adelaide
  • 1994 Cadet pilot training programme commences at Parafield Airport, with ‘Flight Training Adelaide’
  • June 2006 Cathay Pacific moves from twice weekly flights to four flights per week between Adelaide & Hong Kong
  • October 2007 Daily flights introduced.
  • December 2012 By the end of this year, more than 800 Cathay Pacific cadets will have graduated from Flight Training Adelaide.
Thanks CX

Cheers

Virgin Australia's response to the Qantas/Emirates tie up announced a few weeks ago;
IN BRIEF | Virgin Australia is planning to offer more codeshare flights from Adelaide to the UK and Europe through its alliance with Singapore Airlines.

The new shared SQ services, which come on top of flights to Singapore, will extend to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, London (Heathrow), Manchester, Milan, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Rome and Zurich.

With 10 Singapore Airlines flights each week from Adelaide to Singapore, Virgin Australia exec Merren McArthur promises that travellers from the City of Churches "will have access to the greatest frequency of flights of any international airline from Adelaide, allowing connections to Singapore Airlines extensive network to Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia and South Africa" said .

“With a quick one-stop service through Singapore, our customers will be able to connect seamlessly to important business and leisure destinations including London and Paris and earn frequent flyer points and status credits in the process."

Their policy has been for SQ code shares to never impact their etihad codeshares.

It sounds like this policy has been refined so that SQ Code shares won't impact Etihad if Etihad isn't operating directly out of that port.

ie if Etihad ever starts flying Adelaide to Abu Dhabi, expect the SQ codeshares to go.

This is not really newsworthy as such but this is a screen shot from the latest Nearmap update.

My apologies if someone has already answered this question; but once the current development is complete; what will happen to the old ramp/bridge that we all used to use to get into the Departures area?
I take back many of the things I said before 2010; particularly my anti-Rann rants. While I still maintain some of said opinions, I feel I could have been less arrogant. I also apologise to people I offended; while knowing I can't fully take much back. :)

Seems like it's staying, the carpark just connects to it with a pedestrian bridge.
