As per the approved Major Development Plan for this project, the hotel is located between the 25 and 30 Australian Noise Exposure Forecast contours for the Airport, which means the development is "conditionally acceptable" in accordance with Australian Standard AS2021-2015. This essentially means acceptable if the building is built with appropriate noise attenuation measures incorporated into the design and construction. So, yes, there would definitely be a higher level of acoustic engineering / sound proofing in this case.

PS: Remember there is dedicated thread for this development. Suggest one of the mods move these last few posts if sufficient reserves of inclination and chocolate.

Melbourne, Adelaide airports take international passengers from Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport is declining in importance as a gateway for international travel to and from Australia as a bigger proportion of people choose to fly through smaller cities, including Melbourne, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

Only 40 per cent of all international passengers to Australia now fly through Sydney, down from 46 per cent a decade ago, according to a new report by Deloitte Access Economics prepared for the Australian Airports Association.

Brisbane Airport is also used by a lower proportion of international passengers, with 14 per cent choosing to travel through the Queensland airport in 2016-17 compared with 18 per cent a decade ago.

But the proportion of international passengers going through Melbourne Airport has risen to 26 per cent from 20 per cent a decade ago, while Adelaide and the Gold Coast have also increased market share.

The diversification away from Sydney comes as overall international passenger movements in Australia grew 34 per cent to 39 million in the five years to 2016-17, far outstripping growth in domestic passenger movements of 9 per cent to 118 million.

Mark Young, managing director of Adelaide Airport, said the airport worked closely with state tourism authorities to take a "Team South Australia" approach and strategically target new international routes.

"It's a very competitive marketplace and we are in direct open competition [with other airports] in respect to those international services," Mr Young said.

"In South Australia's case we are really playing into what we think is a rising demand for nature-based tourism, food and wine experiences and particularly the clean, healthy provenance of food."

The airport has added international services operated by Qatar Airways, China Southern Airlines and Fiji Airways since 2016, and wants to start direct flights to the US west coast and increase flights to China, its fastest-growing market.

About 40 per cent of the international travellers to and from Adelaide go via other airports in Australia, so the airport is trying to take advantage of smaller, more-fuel-efficient aircraft like the Boeing Dreamliner and Airbus A350 to increase the number of direct flights to overseas destinations, Mr Young said. "There is nothing that stimulates a market better than direct services."

Simon Gandy, chief of aviation at Melbourne Airport, said the airport marketed Melbourne's big sporting and cultural events and multicultural population as well as its expanding infrastructure – such as a planned third runway – when negotiating with airlines.

"We know that we are in a competitive marketplace and we know that airlines, when they look at their available aircraft and where they need to fly them, are going to be looking for routes that actually have a good return," Mr Gandy said.

AAA chief executive Caroline Wilkie said the privatisation of Australian airports had encouraged them to work with local agencies to support tourism and encourage trade.

Thirty years ago, Sydney Airport – which was privatised in 2002 – accounted for more than half of all international passenger movements.

All airports in Australia's capital cities are operated by private owners.

What misleading click bait rubbish lol.

The article clearly states further in, that international arrivals to Australia have increased, and those arrivals have been more so to other cities like Melbourne and Adelaide rather then Sydney. It doesn't seem to be a case of other cities chipping away at arrivals at Sydneys airport, but rather new carriers opening new routes to/from other cities. Our own airport is a prime example of this.
International flights keep coming/going from Melbourne while Sydneys curfew kicks in. With new carriers offering new routes further afield, such as the Gulf states, of course it's international arrivals are going on increase.

We will probably get a once a week seasonal flight, connected to another city along the way or something.

Cathay Pacific today announced its commitment to South Australia increasing its Adelaide to Hong Kong service to six per week, adding over 26,000 seats annually and creating a major boost in tourism and export opportunities.

The additional service operated by an Airbus A330, which commences from 28 October 2018, will mean great things for South Australians, as global gateways become more accessible. Travellers will be able to take advantage of a number of connections to popular locations in North Asia, China, North America and continental Europe, including Cathay Pacific’s new Dublin route.

Operating via a split schedule* means more flexibility and ease for passengers, with an early afternoon departure from Adelaide on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and an evening departure on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The spread of connections into Adelaide will also boost tourism for the city and more broadly, South Australia.

Cathay Pacific is committed to their growth plans in Adelaide, which were cemented with an official Port Adelaide Football Club partnership extension announced this month. The club will play an historic match against the Gold Coast Suns in Shanghai in May, which Cathay Pacific is supporting via special flight packages including flights, game tickets and the option of accommodation.

Althgough I don't fly Cathay Pacific I thought the early morning flight to Hong Kong was perfect for anyone wanting to visit the Fragrant Harbour city. Giving travellers time to settle in after they arrive at their accommodation. Obviously Cathay Pacific see better use in later departures from Adelaide in their connections to Europe, etc. Also the evening flight means morning arrivals in HK. On the return flight to Adelaide flying eastward during the day is best I think. Although the time difference between HK and Adelaide is not a huge factor. The current overnight flight wouldn't have caused too much jetlag, only general tiredness (if you fly Economy). So the new schedule should work out fine. Perhaps better.

The hotel is nearing completion, and the old international terminal is being demolished..Does anyone know when the rest is going to commence?

I know that the priority of works have been identified based on studies and the like however as a passenger I'd have said the following would be priority:

International arrivals and departures (happening)
THEN
Expansion of departures/check in hall and domestic arrivals hall,
Expansion of security checkpoint.

These seems to be the areas that show the most of the airports almost operational capacity.

Good to see that there are plans to move the airline lounges upstairs, I've always felt that Qantas Club in particular takes up a lot of potential retail space on the second floor and has never quite lived up to the former Adelaide Qantas Club with the views of the runway and tarmac.

I would've liked to see some improvements to public transport access, or at least the provision for such in the plan, as this should or could affect a few ideas - probably for the better. Current PT arrangements are woeful.

Those expansion lists don't seem to mention any freight facilities, and the current ones seem to be getting squeezed tighter. Is that a clue that AAL is interested in the Liberal (now Government) proposal for an airport at Monarto?

The southern apron expansion shown in the first diagram has been done according to Google maps satellite view.

No the list/images above are from the existing master plan. Created well before the Liberals idea of a freight airport.

There actually is plans for more freight facilities at Adelaide Airport.
