2000, 2100 Class to be decomissioned!

#1 Post by ChillyPhilly » Sat Oct 25, 2014 5:02 am

It's official. Our stalwart 2000 and 2100 'Jumbo' trains are to be decomissioned. DPTI are taking Expressions of Interest, to be submitted by 6 November.

Personally I think a number should be sunk offshore to form an artificial reef/fish haven of sorts. NYC did similar with a heap of old Metro trains off the coast of Delaware.

They are no doubt ready for the skip yard... but will this impact on frequency and the number of carraiges used?

I noticed the 5.20pm Gawler line express is now 4 carriages instead of 3. Still very full, but the extra carraige helps alot.

They are still used in peak on the gawler and outer harbour lines. What will replace them? Are we going to get more of the 4000 class so there are more left over diesel trains for these lines?

The 29 Jumbo cars will be replaced with 66 new electric ones.

So the original order for new electrics is back on track? I recall it being reduced.

An increase to the amount of services will depend on an increase to the operating budget.

The order was not decreased as I think they already signed the contracts before the Gawler line electrification was paused.

If the Government had any brain they'd retain some for a Barossa Passenger train, and convert the rest to Standard guage to run Spencer Gulf services.

I don't know what the ruling grade is on the Barossa line, but I believe that loaded 2000-class can't make the climb to Belair, so suspect they wouldn't be suitable for Barossa either. I'd also be concerned about getting the critical mass of customers without new trains. All of the initial potential passenger base has an alternative solution that they use now. The new service has to be attractive to some of those people, so that it is viable for long enough for people make long-term decisions such as different employment, different home address or smaller number of cars. Otherwise, the only time it would be used is for AFL games.

One 2-car set is joining the Rail Museum soon!

RUMOUR: today is the last day of service for 2000, 2100 class trains, with the exception of the likes of Footy Express services.

They were in fact retired from service around the 14th of August.
The JetExpress must be saved!

A heap of 2000s and 2100s are now sitting on the wayside off the tracks at the Dry Creek depot.

I guess you could say those old trains are...off the rails.
