The Hills site is still empty land. Construction of the homemaker centre will commence next year.

I thought that had fell through as there is now one on Marion road.

I was at Castle Plaza yesterday and a section of the car park near South Road has been fenced off. Nothing inside the fenced off area yet, but I am guessing some ATCO huts etc will arrive soon.

Maybe the redevelopment is about to begin?

I want to see a pizza bar (even a Pizza Hut would satisfy me) or better chicken takeaway shop (Red Rooster is quite bland n small chickens, I'd rather go up to Black Forest and get a decent size quarter chook from Goody's)

An $80m plan to redevelop Castle Plaza gets Marion Council support

There are plans to double the size of Castle Plaza. Local council has backed the plan as long as an environmental audit clears the way.

AN $80 million vision to double the size of Castle Plaza Shopping Centre in Edwardstown has received the formal backing of Marion Council.

The plans, first mooted five years ago, include turning Raglan Tce into an outdoor mall with cafes and shops, and building high-density housing behind the centre.

The redevelopment also proposes a train station between Edwardstown and Woodlands Park.

Council’s backing comes in the form of supporting a development plan amendment for the project.

Councillors voted to support the amendment on the proviso SA Planning Minister John Rau consults them on environmental audits now underway.

Mayor Kris Hanna said while the development would provide a “wonderful boost for the area” it was crucial any contamination issues were resolved before work started.

“Castle plaza is ready for it, young professionals have been moving into the area and the housing stock has improved a lot,” Mr Hanna said.

“We just have that one reservation about the contamination.”

Independent environmental audits are being conducted at the former Hills Industrial factory site, which neighbours the shopping centre and is earmarked for the high-density housing.

It follows work by the Environment Protection Authority in 2011 to remediate the land after contamination was identified.

The auditor’s report is expected in the next few weeks.

Mr Hanna said he did not want a repeat of the Clovelly Park contamination scandal, which forced almost 30 public housing tenants out of their homes last year.

“Although we’re happy for the plan to go to the Minister, we’re not prepared to have the issue of contamination swept under the carpet,” Mr Hanna said.

“In parts of Clovelly Park 20 years ago, problems were brushed under the carpet.”

Jo Patritti, who owns Collins Booksellers in Castle Plaza, welcomed the project progressing.

“We came in five years ago and we were excited about it then, so it’s all the more exciting now,” Ms Patritti said.

“It will be a fabulous development for the area — it will create more jobs, more variety of shops and become a larger community hub.

“Bring it on.”

Castle Plaza management declined to comment.

While I agree that a train station is a great idea, assuming that both Woodlands and Edwardstown remain as they are there would be three stations along a 1.3km stretch of rail. Slight overkill?

I would think at least once of them would be closed down, especially as both Edwardstown and Woodlands Park didn't see any station upgrades, unlike Marion and Ascot Park.

Sound logic and common sense would be to close both stations and build the new Castle Plaza station.

Hopefully the new station is actually properly integrated with the area, not like the new St Clair station which just drops you out the back of the shopping centre there (which prefers to face the car park instead). We need some proper stations where there's shopping precincts and high density housing, not just platforms with a bus shelter.

Closing both Edwardstown and Woodlands Park and opening a new Edwardstown Station just south of Raglan Ave. Also re route traffic onto Ackland Street, there's no need for that extra set of lights at Raglan Ave and South Rd. It makes more sense since a lot of traffic is heading onto Edward Street from Raglan Ave

Could not agree more. Converting 2 stations to 1 and having the 1 closer to where people actually go should be happening so much more in Adelaide (as has been previosly discussed in other threads)
Also with regard to new station integration with the new Edwardstown shopping centre, it would also appear that we miss so many oportunities with proper integaration even when building new infrastructure.
Some others that come to mind are
1. Oaklands (Westfield Marion) 500m
2. Mawson Lakes (mawson central) 500m
3. Elizabeth (Elizabeth city centre) 300m but across a road out the back of the carpark.
And as Nathan states , St Clair. (back of carpark and out of sight)
All these centres have had multi million$ developements and nearby stations have also had multi million dollar facelifts, but there is no proper integration between the 2.
500M might not sound far to walk, but when it is cold and wet, or blazing hot...or you have to cross a sparce and potentially unsafe carpark -well most folk will opt for a car every time.

+10. Couldn't agree with this more. Let's also not forget the Tonsley Line and the Flinders Medical Centre.

It's as though the government now and governments of the past have intentionally made these stupid planning decisions to test those of us who have a sense of logic.
